If you know what he wants, I personally would get it for him. If you don’t know, I’d let him buy it himself, rather than listen to bad advice on here

Yes. When it starts coming up, it’s a PITA.
I would say no. Not in 308. I have no experience with the scythe, but I didn’t even notice a difference in recoil on my 308 when I removed the break from my omega. However, my rifle is not super light so you might see a difference with a lighter one, but not enough to matter IMO.

Lighten up. Some people enjoy themselves from time to time.
Pretty good for us. My uncle killed a decent 8 and that was his first mature buck he’s killed out there in probably 25 years. I was also able to get an 8 that I had been after. It ended up weighing 205 lbs. Shot midday on 1/27 as I was climbing out of the stand.

I got to see quite a few deer moving with the cold weather. It was obviously slower on the warm days. My buck was killed on the coldest day we had all year and my Uncle’s was killed just as a front started to come through.

Way cheaper than the $350 I paid for an attorney to draft mine

I’m just picking on you! I know how it goes sometimes.
2 deer with Ruger #1 25-06, interlocks, 215 and 75 yards. 1 deer with CVA scout 35 whelen, 180 grain TTSX 300 yards.

Planning to take out a few pigs in the next couple of weeks. Most likely will be using the 6.5 Grendel.

My BIL seems to like his. I can’t speak much on it because I threw my ear plugs in when he shot a hog, but it still seemed pretty quiet.

My uncle was 400 yds away and he said it sounded like a suppressed 22 to him.

Thanks, I’m at 17 days right now. Did you have multiple people on your trust?

Your bullet didn't exit because the impact velocity was too high for it.

No sir. That was a factor for sure, but it ultimately didn’t exit because it entered at the back of the rib cage, taking out 2 or 3 ribs along the way and traveling to the base of the neck before getting lodged in the hide. It’s likely that bullet would have exited on a broadside shot, although, not 100%. My word choice of “weird”, was poor, but my point is that bullets are not “extremely predictable” once they enter an animal. Reasonably predictable, sure, but you know better than to act like it’s a sure thing.

Speaking of bullets, did you get to test out the .223 this season?

Primarily because impact velocity was far too high for that bullet.

If it had blown up, I would agree with you, but that wasn’t the case.

Over-expansion or not, a 165 grain bullet traveling 3000 fps that stays together at 15 yards and doesn’t exit a thin skinned animal is weird.

I’ve shot plenty of deer and hogs at close range with a .270 and “not particularly robust bullets” and I don’t recall recovering any bullets.

That's interesting. I know you'll lose some speed with the shorter barrel, but you should still be 2400+ fps at 100 yards, and with that bullet I'd think that's plenty to drive it through.

It was probably going closer to 2,700+ so I’m sure it had plenty of expansion, but I would have expected it to pass through also. I shot a whitetail buck at 15 yards (from 25’ up) with a 300 SAUM 165 grain core lokt that didn’t pass through, bullets do some weird things sometimes.

Rize, you got any pictures of the bullets you recovered? Not trying to derail the thread, I’m sure OP can gain some valuable insight from terminal ballistics on his target animal.

That’s impressive… how was the blood trail?

There are so many premium bullets available these days people often overlook traditional cup and core soft points. But I always like hearing about terminal performance regardless of what it’s for.

I guess my definition of quality is a bit different. While I agree VX3 is a great benchmark, it doesn’t make everything below that shite. Pretty much agree with everything else you said.

FWIW I picked up a VX-3 3.5-10x40 duplex the other day for $367 after shipping. Gun.deals is a dangerous website when you’re looking to spend money.

You can’t go wrong with 300 WM especially for nilgai at long range. Bullet selection will be critical. You might want to look into something with a longer barrel if you don’t plan to suppress it.

Also, someone will recommend Tikka shortly… they have good reason to, and it’s worth looking into also. However, my experience with Ruger American gen 1s have been great accuracy wise.

Glass quality is vastly overhyped in scopes

You’re right but glass shouldn’t be ignored. The folks that say you need Swarovski/VX-5/etc. glass are overhyping it. But your recommendations all have decent glass for what most of us use scopes for. I would consider them all to have “quality glass.”
