That’s what they should have done in the first place. Would have been much better money spent building on top of the European tour than paying hundreds of millions for guys like Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Bubba Watson and Taylor Gooch.

I really doubt he loses it, but if he does, the choker tag will come back with a vengeance

I want a blow up just because this weekend looks like it’s going to be unbelievably boring. I’m pretty indifferent on Rory, but I hate boring majors.
With the conditions being so hard, I can’t see anyone running him down. It’s going to take him melting down. And Rory hasn’t even driven the ball well. But he’s been hitting his irons great, putting very well and getting up and down from everywhere. Just hard to see happening. It’s way easier to see him pulling away even more tomorrow and giving us a very boring Sunday.

This might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on this site.
Napier was the worst coach at UF since 1950.

Ruiz was never their biggest NIL donor. That would be the Mas brothers.

re: Is UF basketball the new Duke?
Posted by generalgator87 on 3/4/26 at 12:52 pm to PSS101
The term blueblood is weird, especially in basketball.
Duke has only won national championships with one coach and all their titles are after 1990. Most consider them a blueblood, and I think rightfully so, but I'm not even 40 and all their championships are during my lifetime. Seems way different than UCLA, Kentucky, and UNC.
UCONN has won it all 6 times, all since 1999. Are they a blueblood?

I am 100% in agreement.
Football is the heart of UF sports. If football is successful, it will trickle down to the other sports. That is especially true with revenue sharing. The more NIL we get for football, the more of the revenue sharing funds we can use for sports like baseball.

re: LIV Golf Adelaide (ANTHONY KIM WINS!!)
Posted by generalgator87 on 2/16/26 at 12:05 pm to JimTiger72
I got to see AK at the LIV promotions event a few weeks back. I posted on here about it. His ball striking looked good and he was burning a ton of edges with his putts. Still, I could not imagine him coming back from 5 shots against two of the best players in the world when he was having trouble finishing third against the likes of Matt Jones, Keirnan Vincent and a bunch of guys from Asian tour whose names are impossible to spell
Definitely the biggest story in golf from the weekend. And Pebble Beach was a great tournament too. But the comeback story is just impossible to beat. 3/4 of the top stories on Golf Digest's website and the top 3 "Reader Favorite" stories on Golf.com are about AK winning.
In terms of majors, I know its obviously unlikely. But honestly, there is a pathway now with LIV getting OWGR points. AK got 23 points for winning Adelaide. In comparison, Patrick Reed got 20 OWGR points for winning the Qatar Masters.

Honestly, I am trying to figure out if we have gotten better since non-conference (I think we probably have) or the SEC is just bad (it definitely doesn't seem nearly as good as last year).

Just wanted to thank everyone for their tips. I used a ton of stuff in here. We did have to modify the tournament, making it a one day event instead of two.
On to the results, I played the best round of my life. I am a 17 handicap from the tees I was playing, and shot an 84. I had the best front 9 I've ever played, shooting a 38 and started off birdie/par/par/birdie. Unfortunately, the wind really picked up on the back 9 and my 17 handicap mistakes also picked up. It was a net best ball tournament, and my team won by 4 shots.
And I owe you all a ton of thanks for helping make it happen!

Honestly, I think if he's even an average coach, we should be winning 8-10 games a season. Billy does not get enough blame for as bad as he was. He was the worst coach at UF since immediately after WWII. Not only was he a terrible on the field coach, he was terrible at managing the coaching staff and managing the roster. He refused to adapt to NIL and the portal. The worst part was that he was given everything he was asked for and more.
There was only one thing Billy accomplished in his time at UF. He lowered fans expectations to levels I have never seen before in my entire life.

There is no doubt Ole Miss has spent more than us in the portal, but I definitely don't think its clear they are spending more than us overall. Just look at our recruiting rankings. We have spent a ton on recruits and player retention whereas they spend way more on the portal.
It was also a pretty open secret they wanted Sumrall, but they definitely had a more complicated situation with Kiffin and the playoffs.
The other thing is that UGA and Bama aren't spending a ton on NIL. At least not on the Texas/A&M level. They are typically getting discounts due to player development. We've had to pay the "suck tax" throughout Napier's tenure.
In my mind based on what I have gathered from our sources and other teams sources, in the SEC, you have a clear first tier with Texas and A&M. LSU may have jumped to that tier with the Kiffin hiring. Then you have a second tier that is pretty comparable, with UF/Bama/Auburn/UGA/Tennessee/Ole Miss/Oklahoma.
If you are spending in that 2nd tier, you are spending enough to make the playoffs if you have good coaching. Which we not have had so far in the 2020's.
There is also no doubt in my mind that we can jump to the top tier with good fundraising. Florida Victorious and the UAA have shown very little alignment. There are stories all over about funds being diverted away from NIL to go to things like building facilities. And other than sending out a cute little gift box, they don't do much to foster good will among regular boosters.
What we need to do is do a way better job with both the Ole Miss model of getting every day fans involved (similar to their Grove Collective) as well as buttering up our higher level boosters. We are definitely not operating on all cylinders on that front.

It definitely is way different than the NFL or other pro sports where spending is extremely transparent. Hopefully college football can get there some day.
But you can use context clues to figure out where we are on relative terms. LSU is obviously spending more than us or Lane would have come to UF. We obviously have a bigger budget than Auburn, Ole Miss or Arkansas because Sumrall came here.
You can also look at who players are being recruited by to get a good idea. Over the last few years, most of our recruiting battles have been with Miami, Texas, Auburn, and A&M. Those teams are known for spending and the guys we are recruiting are obviously mostly worried about getting paid based on the teams they are interested in. We have won our fair share of those battles, which tells me we aren't just being cheap/poor/have no money.

We are spending more than Ole Miss who made the playoffs last year. We are spending more than Auburn who has been known to spend a ton, even before it was legal.
Why do you think we are spending so little? I am not saying we are at the Texas/A&M/Ohio State/LSU level. But we didn't get DJ Lagway or LJ McCray or Dallas Wilson because we were cheap. We didn't retain Baugh, Woods, and Wilson on discounts.
We spent a ton of money last year. More than enough to make the playoffs with that roster. It was just wasted on guys who didn't contribute (i.e. Sapp and Lagway) or were injured (Dallas Wilson and Caleb Banks).
I think you are underselling how bad Billy Napier was at roster management. He spent a ton on injured guys and young guys, not on trenches or filling needs in the portal.
Also, if it was simply about money, then look at how the biggest spenders did last year:
Texas - Missed Playoffs.
Texas A&M - lost in first round.
Ohio State - lost in their first game in the quarterfinals.
LSU (they spent a ton on both the portal and recruiting last year too) - fired their coach and missed the playoffs.
Texas Tech - got shut out in the quarterfinals.
Miami - 3rd in the ACC. They made the championship game but honestly had no business in the playoffs in the first place. But they do show that with the playoffs, making a run is a crapshoot that depends on matchups and staying healthy.

I think we are spending enough to be competitive in the SEC. Sumrall had the option of going to Ole Miss, Auburn and Arkansas and decided to come here instead. He didn't come here for the logo, so we obviously are spending more than those three. Ole Miss obviously spends a decent amount and Auburn is known for throwing around cash, so it seems we spread it around more evenly than either of those two schools.
If we are spending more than Ole Miss and Auburn, we should be spending in that 2nd tier of schools after Texas, A&M, Miami, Oregon, and Ohio State, which is plenty to get into the playoffs. And you have to think of it similarly as the NFL. All you need to do is get in the playoffs, and at that point, matchups and injuries are what matters most.

Thanks everyone! Already bought some more stuff to get prepared based on the responses.
Unfortunately, this is a bigger money tournament (at least for me). The only good thing is that it's A/B flighted, and I am one of the higher handicaps, so not much is expected from me.
I am hoping that if I can prepare well enough, that might give me a little edge compared to the field. I don't think anyone playing is taking the weather as serious as me

Cold Weather Golf Tips
Posted by generalgator87 on 1/27/26 at 10:48 am
Have a big tournament this weekend, and unfortunately, it's going to be cold. We tee off first thing in the morning (which will probably be adjusted by frost delays), and the temps are going to be in the low-mid 30's at that time here right outside Tampa. The highs on Saturday will get up to the mid 50's and on Sunday the high is 44.
I am a native Floridian and a newish golfer, and I have never played in these kind of temperatures. I already got some thermal underwear, handwarmers, cold weather gloves and a new golf jacket. I also bought some Titleist TruFeel golf balls because I heard the lower compression golf balls are better in the cold.
Anything else I need to do other than enjoy some Irish coffee? I am guessing getting there a little earlier to stretch and warm up is a non-negotiable.
