What are your thoughts on the suspension? Are the LHSAA and other teams "hatin'" or is your guy deserving?

I first saw the video last Saturday. I thought it was conduct unbecoming of a Patriot. That foolishness isn't taught by the coaches. I felt that he should be suspended for one game but it turned into a two game suspension. In my opinion it appeared to be a malicious intent to injure an opponent. Fortunately the Raider player wasn't seriously injured.

GynoSanberg, Have we crossed paths or competed against each other?

Is the fayard guy the PA guy? Talk about a grown man obsessed w high school sports

No, Bob Eutsler is the PA announcer.

In 1978 Kinder beat Curtis in the Semi Finals at West Jeff Stadium. It's Curtis' only loss in the Semi finals. The Patriots are 34-1 in Semi Final games.

But we are taking about guys who were significant players in their college programs getting an extra year in HS while no one else was really doing it. Pretty big advantage.

What's even funnier is the Vals that got held back. How does anyone even justify that? Blatantly holding back kids to play a fricking sport. Think about it. That's sad

Don't kid yourself and think other schools weren't holding kids back. That practice started when Moby Dick was a minnow. It's magnafied because of JCC's success.

You assume that every valedictorian was a football player. There have only been a few football players who were valedictorians at JCC and they didn't stay back.

The decision to hold kids back is up to the parents. I didn't stay back and didn't agree with it but it wasn't against the rules. On the surface I see how it appears to be unethical if it's done just to play a sport. But again, that was a decision the parents made.
GynoSandberg, I didn't say the valedictorian was a holdback. I said he started at Curtis in Pre K. This was to imply that he wasn't recruited. In fact he didn't stay back. He earned an athletic scholarship to Tulane but had an academic scholarship offer as well.

As for the leaders of the baseball and football team in the late '90s being holdbacks, so what? Holding kids back wasn't against the rules. Now there are rules in place to curtail holding kids back.
NorthTiger, My comment was an opinion based off an article that I read last spring and mainly off comments told to me by those at the meeting in March. Since I stand by my comments I was compelled to give you the proof. It took me a while to find the article. Here is the link to the article, LINK

Here is what is in writing, "Winnfield principal Jane Griffin took several shots at John Curtis Christian school.

Griffin’s football team lost to Curtis 33-3 in the December 2011 2A football championship.

“When a school is able to dominate there is something going on,” said Griffin. “It is my 145 pound lineman against their 300 pound division one recruit.”

Subcommittee chair, State Senator Page Cortez R-Lafayette said his committee wanted to deal with facts, not innuendo.

None of the public schools principals in attendance were able to furnish specific “recruiting” violations.

John Curtis headmaster and head football coach J.T. Curtis said his school has nothing for which to apologize. “We do everything we can to be above board,” said Curtis.
“We have nothing to hide.”

Curtis got a stirring recommendation surprisingly from a public school.

“If I had a kid that was good, I would by calling coach Curtis too,” said North Vermilion athletic director and head football coach Tommy Byler."

There is only one innuendo (something is going on) in this article but from those who were at the meeting there were more comments that were borderline slanderous towards the school. I was told the tone of the comments wasn't friendly in nature as well.

This may not be enough to satisfy you but this article and conversations that I had with Curtis administrators is how I formed the opinion that the Winnfield principal hates Curtis. Also when the Lady Patriots softball team played Winnfield in the QuarterFinals in April, the Winnfield fans wore shirts that referenced the public vs private issue. One of the mothers of a Lady Patriot told me a man on the Winnfield side was pretty rude and tried to pick a verbal fight with one of the mothers of a Lady Patriot. Now I'm not saying Winnfield's principal told the fans to act that way but it could be assumed that her comments in March could have stoked the fire a bit. Who knows? So from our side of the fence hopefully you'll see why I and other Patriots feel that Winnfield's principal isn't too fond of the Patriots.

Here are a couple of video links. The first is of Coach JT voicing his opinion and the second is an opinion from a guy covering Prep Sports. Neither video says that Winnfield's principal is calling out the Patriots but both videos mention that Proposal 18 is aimed at John Curtis. Since Winnfield's principal is the main author of Proposal 18 she is going to get most of the fingers pointed towards her. I know the Destrehan and Port Barre principals have a part in this as well.

LINK and LINK

In response to your opinion, I wasn't making this personal or attacking Winnfield's principal. I simply stated an opinion based off an article and a conversation. To me a personal attack would have been me calling the principal names and making slanderous comments about her.

I'm not going to include Evangel because I don't know much about them. I've been associated with JCC since 1981 and I've had to defend our program a lot. I will always give facts with my response about the program. Everything that I've posted except that one opinion has been fact. I don't run from the opportunity to tell people about the Patriots. But if you walked in our shoes you'd understand why we say people are just hating. People want to find reasons why they aren't successful so they try to discount our efforts. To be honest we have the perfect storm to be successful. JCC is located in metropolitan New Orleans so the pool to draw students is bigger. The elementary program starts in the 4th grade. The huddle, cadence and base plays are the same as the varsity. Coach JT only had to answer to Mr. Curtis. There aren't any QB or Booster Clubs to answer to so there isn't any political clutter. Being from north Louisiana you probably have seen this first hand. The quality of coaching is top notch. Now being as successful as JCC has been you might be surprised to learn that Winnfield has better facilities. All JCC has is a weightroom, lockerroom and a practice field.

To your point, small Class 2A teams really can't compete. This can be said of any rural school. But now we'd be getting into city vs rural. Obviously rural schools are going to be at a disadvantage because of population.

I'll admit that the previous system wasn't perfect but this "Every Man is a King" system isn't cutting it. Just wish there was more thought put into this instead of pushing it through.

NorthTiger, I stand by my comments.

lsutigers1992, no guilt on the Patriots part. Trust me there is a lot of hatred for the Patriots. It comes with winning.
See the meetings last Spring. She doesn't say John Curtis but her remarks were aimed at the Patriots. You have to be blind not to see it.
In regards to Curtis vs Winnfield, the Patriots and Tigers have a little playoff history. They first met in the 1979 Semi Finals. From what I hear, it was a classic. The Tigers had Ricky Chatman and Jeffery Dale among other great athletes. The Patriots won a close one.

In 1982, though the Patriots lost by 9, the Tigers were the better team. Winnfield was very fast and playing on artificial turf, they looked faster.

The 2011 game was close at half, 7-3. In the first half Winnfield's guards were getting to the Curtis LBs. A halftime adjustment, moving the LBs back a yard, allowed the LBs to use their speed to avoid being blocked and get to the edge faster so they could tackle the QB and RB.

It's unfortunate that Winnfield's principal has so much hate for Curtis. We respect Winnfield's history and program and have enjoyed competing against the Tigers.
LOL...touche'. I'm back! Been reading for years but haven't seen many good threads to post a reply. I belong to another board so I spend more time there. Even on that site I usually don't respond to the anti Curtis posts. A fellow Patriot shared this thread on FACEBOOK and I couldn't hold my tongue any longer. People are going to believe what they want but I felt it was important to tell the truth.

Good question about the holdbacks. Honestly today I don't know. The rules changed in regards to holding kids back. If someone who knows please correct me but I understand that if a kid stays back in the 8th grade he forfeits his senior year. I think the cutoff to hold a kid back is the 6th grade? Holding kids back was a common practice at Curtis. I did not stay back. I didn't need to academically or athletically. Let's go back 25 years to my senior season in 1988. We had 18 seniors. 7 of the 18 stayed back in the 8th grade so if I round up, 39% of the 1988 seniors were 8th grade holdbacks.

One of the issues that I have on the vote for the split is that principals from Classes B and C had a vote. My opinion is if you don't play football you have no say so in the matter. I don't know how many Class B and C principals voted but wonder if you took the number that did vote out, would the proposal still have been passed??

The problem with what is in play today wasn't fully thought out. I also find it hypocritical that the public schools were ok competing against private schools for district championships but want to split come playoff time. It'll be interesting to see what happens in January.
oldtimefootball, Damn pops! You either need to drop your crayons and get your nose out of the government cheese or go check your Pop-Tarts because I think they're burning!

I usually don't respond to ignorant posts like this but you're low hanging fruit. It's no wonder since you're from Winnfield that you have the "Every man a King!" mentality.

Why is it important that you know how many Curtis football players pay their tuition? I'm a taxpayer so I pay for your kid(s)to go to Winnfield High School. So who's getting a free education? I'm a Curtis alum. My parents paid what they could and my dad and I worked off the rest of the tuition. We painted classrooms, mopped and buffed floors, sold programs at the football games and many other jobs that needed to be done around school. Today there are plenty of players, non-athletic students and parents that work off the tuition.

Most of the chirping is coming from rural Louisiana, mainly Winnfield. Obviously schools from the larger cities have larger pools to draw students. If you live in the country, either play with who you have in school or move to a more populated area. As for recruiting, all private and parochial schools do it. They have to in order to keep the doors open. Don't kid yourself, there are plenty of public schools that recruit as well, see northeast Louisiana. Here is a suggestion for public schools, recruit your hallways. I bet there are plenty of talented kids in your school but for whatever reason aren't playing. Get those kids out on the field!

You also mentioned in another post, "John Curtis has more black kids every year. This is not in any way to bring race into this discussion. You have got to be kidding me if you try to tell me that these kids have the money to pay the thousands of dollars that a private school costs." ARE YOU SERIOUS?!! Take your Klan hood off and step into the new millennium! John Curtis Christian has seen an increase in black students of the past 20 years. But since you live in backwoods rural Louisiana you can't comprehend that not all black kids live in wooden shacks on a plantation. John Curtis Christian has plenty of students white AND black who come from middle to upper middle class families. AND believe it or not John Curtis Christian has several black kids who come from affluent families. Check this out. This is going to blow your mind. Last year's Valedictorian was a football player. He started attending John Curtis Christian in Pre-K. He earned a football scholarship to Tulane. Oh by the way he comes from a mixed relationship. His father(white)has a good job and his mother(black)is a nurse in the Louisiana National Guard and is an attorney in her civilian life. That's just one of many success stories in the 51 years of John Curtis Christian.

You bring up that Curtis had a chance to move up to Class 5A and didn't. A lot of people say that. Well we didn't because the administration was looking out for the whole athletic program. Unfortunately that's not good enough to satisfy the public. I hope there is a "football only" class and that Coach JT puts the Patriots in it. The Patriots have NEVER shied away from competition. We have played at #1 Hoover, AL in 2006 and #1 Euless Trinity (TX)in 2008. Over the years the Patriots have played several schools from Texas to Florida. MANY teams from the higher classifications in Louisiana refuse to play the Patriots. Let's use this year as an example of how the Patriots will play anyone. Here were the first 5 games: Bergen Catholic from New Jersey; St. Thomas Aquinas from Ft. Lauderdale; FL, East St. John (5A); Karr (4A) and St. Aug (5A). Nobody in Louisiana had it tougher than the Patriots in the pre-district schedule.

The Patriots Nation won't apologize for it's success. All 25 football championships have been paid for with sweat equity. So I ask you oldtimefootball,is it fair to criticize the Patriots for having 90%+ attendance during the summer voluntary workouts (4 days a week) when a kid in north central Louisiana has to work the farm or a kid from the bayou has to work his dad's shrimp boat and doesn't have equal time to prepare for the upcoming season? Is it fair to criticize the Patriots for being in a metropolitan area and have a larger pool to draw from?

Here's the secret to the Patriots success. W-O-R-K! Nobody outworks the Patriots. The key is to be as productive as possible during practice. Coach JT doesn't cut anyone. During practice everyone gets multiple reps, even the Freshman. The Patriots don't have a QB Club or Booster Club to answer to like some rural schools have. Also during playoffs (hunting season) the Patriots are focused on football, not the deer stand or duck blind.

The previous system wasn't perfect but it's light years better than what's in play this season. Louisiana is too small to have 9 champions. The mentality that the public schools can't compete is hogwash. The Patriots have played in 33 state championships, winning 25 and losing 8. Did you know that the Patriots have played a public school in 23 of the 33 championship games? 70% of the Patriots state championship games were against public schools. Coach JT has lost 56 games. Did you know that 34 of the 56 losses were to public schools? Coach JT has lost more to public schools than private.

All you need to know about Coach JT is this. He was head coach in the All Star game that was played in Baton Rouge 11 times. He was 11-0 in those games. He only had the kids for 5 days before the game and somehow managed to go undefeated coaching kids that he never coached before.

I'm not here to sell you on the Patriots. I'm here to present the truth. But something tells me you can't handle the truth. So instead of focusing on why another school is so successful, spend that time and energy on getting your school better. If you recruit your halls, have quality coaching, productive practices and keep the booster clubs at arms length you might be a bit more successful.

Geaux Patriots!
