re: At what point in the season did you say “yeah the baseball team just isn’t good”

3 out of 5 years Jay hasn’t hosted a regional. Has never sniffed a conference title.
Objectively below LSU standards regular season coach with a 5 year track record. He’s gone on two incredible post season runs on the back of having the best college pitcher in baseball. Hopefully he can have a top three pitcher who’s also nails in the post season every few years.

Jay can’t build a consistently elite regular season team. He’s very fortunate he’s gotten on two hot streaks in the postseason because it’s covered up for the fact that he’s not a very good consistent program building coach

Same course. One event is when you had the PGA running things on the ground and helping get everything ready. One event is with LIV “helping” prep the course.
Not sure this is the pro-LIV defense you think it is.

Yeah LIV requires well over a billion, maybe close to $1.5 billion, from PIF to cover their expenses for a season. $500m in purses, plus the guaranteed player payments, plus all other employees (including C suite executives and big name broadcast talent) real estate, subsidizing broadcasts and tournament infrastructure/logistics. Advertising.
They’ve already spent that $250m.

They took that interview down already. Scott O’Neil has said a lot of things in the last 36 hours. He’s not someone I would take at full face value right now

Wait until PIF leaves and they’re asking guys to #growthegame for no guaranteed money and significantly reduced purses

Pirate King and MrLSU coming in here shortly to tell us the PGA hacked LIV’s stream to distract from the fact they’re about to evicted from their Ponte Vedra headquarters.

That guy is just parroting the “no you’re the one with the problem!” counter-narrative the LIV bots have been throwing around since yesterday.
Maybe it’s true maybe it isn’t. Regardless it lacks any sort of context, and without context it’s meaningless. The pga tour has been very upfront about overhauling its tournament schedule and competition structure and implementing SSG’s vision. Part of the overall restructure is it’s no longer a non profit, which means the business has to be thought about differently.

Idk, the previous email reference is odd. As are the reports that they hard started to miss some payments.
Regardless it’s irrelevant at this stage. They’ve gotten some level of funding to continue the season to some degree

It reads like Jordan Belfort pumping up Stratton Oakmont employees while he knows the entire thing is a gigantic house of cards that is destined to come crashing down

It’s very clear that there was significant doubt inside of LIV as to whether they would in fact be able to continue the season.
They must’ve gotten an 11th hour commitment from PIF to finish out the year

Per the Fox report posted in the other thread, exactly what most of us were saying. PIF is withdrawing but the extent and timing was up in the air and being discussed over the past couple days.
One of the possibilities was they withdraw immediately and that would’ve been the “holy shite they’re cancelling tournaments mid-season” outcome. Instead it seems like they decided to fund through the end of the season.
Based on the timing of LIVs communications and the other reporting seems like there was real fear the plug would be pulled immediately, but PIF must’ve decided at some point over the past 24 hours to commit to the full season

As most of us said, it sounds like it was touch and go over the past few days whether PIF would fund through the rest of the season.
Based on how this played out I would guess LIV didn’t get that commitment until today.

I’ve been consistent the whole time that I thought it was unlikely they pull the plug mid season because of the logistical/legal issues and the fact that Yasir doesn’t want egg on his face.
But something clearly happened behind closed doors over the past few days. Maybe O’Neil/Yasir were able to convince MBS to continue full steam ahead. Maybe they convinced him to give them enough runway to finish the season which initially he wasn’t going to do. But the smoke from this doesn’t come from nowhere. Whether the fire has been permanently put out or just temporarily lessened is something we won’t know for a few weeks at least

It doesn’t mean anything. All this tells us is Scott O’Neill and the high up LIV execs are projecting confidence to their constituents, I.e their players and employees.
All the reports last night and today said the high likelihood was LIV Mexico went ahead as scheduled and then things would be reassessed.
This could mean that everything is fine and all of the other reports were 100% wrong, or Scott O’ Neil is lying through his teeth to present a brave to his constituents while he tries to find a life boat behind closed doors. Or anything in between. We won’t really know until the end of this season (unless it’s a true just folding up shop can’t afford the lights on situation)

You might want to give it a couple weeks before you start taking a victory lap. Most of the serious reporting said LIV Mexico was still going to happen and that the executives were still trying to find a way to keep things afloat.
What else would they tell their players in the short term, even if in reality they see the writing on the wall?
We’ll see. Maybe all the reporting was totally wrong or maybe this was all a weird pr ploy by LIV. Or maybe Yasir convinced MBS to give them more rope.
Or they’re just getting all their ducks in a row to try to wrap things up as best they can. Remember when LIV first launched it “died” after Phil’s phone call quotes leaked? Everyone said they weren’t going to join and hadn’t spoken to anyone. And then two months later after a pause they did an about face and relaunched.
Would be poetic if things ended the same way

Also legitimately what an addition to Rory’s legacy. Being the rock upon which the PGA was saved. Sticking his neck out, getting lambasted by folks.
Especially for the Europeans, hard to imagine the tour holding on to Fleetwood/Lowry/Fitz/Rose/Hovland if Rory doesn’t do what he does.
Also Scottie to a lesser extent by just becoming the clear best player in golf right as this all happened and never being linked with LIV in the slightest. No tour without him was going to have an argument for being an elite tour.

If that was their goal they could’ve gotten it in 2023 but they refused to give up on team golf. Yasir wouldn’t budge that team golf had to be a major factor in the pga tour going forward.
If all they cared about was a stake in the pga tour and a foot in the tour they could’ve gotten that

Yeah reading between the lines it seems like what may still be undecided is whether PIF is completely cutting the cord immediately, phasing it out entirely but over a longer period, or simply reducing its financial commitment in such a way that purses and guaranteed money will decrease but the league could continue in some fashion.

Financial times just had a report that no final decision has been made on LIV or its future but that all indications are that PIF has decided to cut back significantly on its financial support, perhaps even completely withdraw funding, and that an announcement on specifics come as early as tomorrow.

Assuming the issue is Saudi funding, sure it doesn’t help that their biggest draw’s contract is up after this year and is asking for $500 mill guaranteed to stick around.
