I think the ground offensive would’ve started a few days ago had they not been holding out hope that they could save some hostages. In that respect the tactic of taking hostages was successful for Hamas and likely allowed for the escape of many fighters or at the least more time to prepare and booby trap most of the city.

I think it’s probably even more. The IDF has been pounding the hell out of Gaza with 2000 lb bombs and rockets and artillery for week. Of course there are going to be a ton of non combatants killed.
