I’ve been going to most of the fall/spring scrimmages since Jay got here and I think this is the most impressive group of freshman we’ve had since he got here. Doesn’t mean it’ll all translate to the season because there’s only so many at bats and innings available but Ruckert, Braun, and Serna all mashed this fall. Clauss and Patrick struggled at times but really flashed a lot of potential and didn’t struggle nearly as bad as we’ve seen freshman hitters do in the past few seasons. Paz, Ricken, and Theophilus will all have opportunities to show that they are conference roster adds after the stuff they flashed in the fall.

I really think this freshman class can be really special. Paired with last year’s freshman class and what we could potentially be bringing in for next year, I don’t think we’re going anywhere soon.
Anyone know when January scrimmages usually start? We’re only 42 days from start of the season
I saw him pitch twice in the fall. Was struggling to hit 87-88 mph on his fastball. That’s slower than he threw in high school and he’s almost 2 years out of surgery. I’m not a doctor or have inside info but it doesn’t seem like his recovery was going well.

Genei Sato, Pitcher from Japan who throws 99mph transferring to US for college. I’m sure he’ll end up west coast like the kid at Stanford but may be worth a look.

Yeah excuse my confidence. I’m sitting near the coach’s wives and that was their guess so I assumed they knew more than me. The mystery continues.

He threw a bullpen at the MLB combine so I don’t think that surgery date is correct. LINK

It’s Marcos Paz

It’s Marcos Paz. They don’t have a practice jersey with 97 on it.
Utah State in 2019 at 11AM was brutally hot. But kinda cool to think it was Jordan Love vs Joe Burrow
Just from a quick look it seems that Kade Anderson is the only draft eligible sophomore next year. Milam only 9 days past the deadline.

Edit: it occurred to me that Shores and Noot will technically be redshirt sophomores and both will be draft eligible
Obviously none of us want a kid getting hurt but one less year of high school wear and tear and likely getting him to campus with Jay, who has shown a really adept ability at working with guys coming off TJ, is not the worst thing for his career.

Looks like LSU is currently expecting 17 pitchers on the roster this fall if Victorian makes it in. This is not counting Brown as a pitcher. That's a pretty low number.

My count has 19:
Anderson
Benge
Cowan
Dorsey
Eyanson
Evans
Guidry
Lape
Mayers
Noot
Primeaux
Rizy
Schmidt
Sheerin
Shores
Victorian
Ware
Williams
Woods

Jake Brown as a maybe would be 20.
Right and we’re saying that transferring is not an option for him at this point. His only option that isn’t LSU for next season would be Juco.

We started Jobert in outfield for 2 years and he could barely catch a fly ball. If you hit .340 in conference as Larson did then you have a guaranteed spot on a Jay Johnson team.

I really hope we can keep Larson. I have zero inside info, but I’m not sure where he fits in with the current roster

Where would he go? The portal has been closed for weeks.
Infield of Jones, Milam, Dickinson, and Braswell is pretty nasty next year
So right now between returning players, transfers, and recruits who are very likely to make it, we have 31 spots spoken for.

As far as guys still on the draft radar I’d say that number is 13

Returning players:
Ulloa
Herring
J. Jones
Brasewell

Transfers:
Stanfield
Hayden
Cowan
Hernandez
Ware

Recruits:
M. Ryan
Hogg
Fountain
Rizy

Then unknown with Harden (who Jay didn’t mention when he talked about our incoming juco kids) and Dylan Thompson.
If the draft is kind to us the next two days then we’re gonna have to figured out how to get to 40.

He said in an interview right before the draft today that his only 3 options were to reclassify and be in the 2024 draft, stay put and be in the 2025 draft, or go to Juco. He didn’t even mention college or LSU. He’s not coming here unfortunately.
I agree. Pretty much every scout I’ve seen talk about him agrees that he can’t really improve his stock by coming back even if his stats improve. He’s still going to be a right handed, first base only, with a high K rate next year. If he can’t improve his stock then the only reason to come back is if he just wants another year of college for fun. I don’t expect him back.

Herring is the one who could improve his stock because at this point he’s only proven himself to be a reliever and there’s literally zero MLB relievers now who sit 91-92, even lefties. But if he proves he can throw 6-7 innings then I could see him being a Patrick Corbin type guy.
I think this makes sense. This kid wants a guaranteed weekend spot and we can’t guarantee that to anyone out of the portal right now.
