It's called disposable income. What anyone chooses to spend it on is up to them. Some take trips, some buy watches, others pay coaches not to coach, etc. Everyone spends money on something someone else would find absurd. Such is life.

So the ticket purchase of $297 defaults to it, but for the low price of $30 per flight you can now "upgrade" to window or aisle
Don't forget additional costs for bags, wifi, snacks, terminal fees, service fees, too many fees fee and taxes (unless of course you've logged 50,000 miles in the Loyalty Rewards program)
Total cost of flight $792
