re: Project Hail Mary is a Huge Gamble by Amazon
Posted by Uncommon Idea on 3/3/26 at 2:41 pm to RLDSC FAN
So its about 54% (pre-tax credits) of what Amazon has spent on producing EACH season of Rings of Power (not to mention the $250 million for the rights)?
I don't think it's such a big gamble comparatively. Is it important o see if Amazon can actually make a good theater movie? Yes, but cost-wise, it's small fish.
I can't wait for the breathless tweets and stories about the James Bond film. :dope:

NFL Draft Buzz - Cole Payton
At that point in the draft, say #170 or #189, finding a potential backup QB who can contribute by addiing another dimension to the offense is a viable choice since you're quite unlikely to find a starter elsewhere.
quote:
The path forward for Payton looks a lot like a Taysom Hill-style deployment early in his career, where a creative offensive staff uses him in designed packages, short-yardage situations, and red zone run concepts while he develops as a passer behind a veteran starter. The ceiling is there for more. His deep ball placement, his composure under duress, and his competitive toughness all suggest a guy who could grow into a capable starter if the development plan is right. But that is a big "if," and he needs patience and coaching to get there. He belongs on a roster, and the physical tools alone make him worth the investment as a late-round selection, but the team that drafts him has to commit to a multi-year development timeline and resist the temptation to rush him onto the field before the mechanics and processing are ready.
quote:True but beyond maybe Taylen Green, most players that would fit as Taysom Hill replacements are lower round pick guys.
I feel like there are more pressing needs than finding the next Taysom Hill

I'd love him IF the Saints traded down.
But I can't see him going that high.
And given the Saints history, he'd better have a super high RAS to help justify the pick.

If he's traded, they definitely have an out (save for the 19.5 million salary guaranteed on the 5th day of the league year). Which leans more into if the Jets don't want to necessarily go all in with Kyler Murray.
But that basically goes for the Cardinals too since his signing bonus amortization ends after this season and most of the other money is tied up in various options/bonuses.

re: NCAA committee considering 7-figure fines, head coach suspensions for transfer violations
Posted by Uncommon Idea on 2/25/26 at 4:09 pm to RLDSC FAN

The committee relayed some of those proposed penalties later on Wednesday, including prohibiting the head coach from all football (recruiting and on-field coaching) and administrative duties through six games; a fine of 20% of a school’s football budget; and requiring a school to reduce the number of roster spots by five for the next season.
So the NCAA wants to guarantee more court cases (that they'll probably lose given their history).
What college is going to give up 20% of their football budget without going to court?

Is it better for the Jets to signed Malik Willis or trade for Murray?
I guess it depends on how much they want to gamble.
With Willis, he's younger and arguably has more potential at a somewhat cheaper price point (depending on the contracts offered by the amount of teams that might try to land him).
With Murray, you'd have to trade something and then potentially be on the hook for, at maximum cash paid (assuming no payment by the Cardinals or need to renegotiate with Murray), $42,542,500 in 2026, $36,335,000 in 2027, and an possibly (option year) $46,350,000 in 2028. Kyler Murray Spotrac Cash Breakdown
Now Murray does have more of a track record (that's both good and bad) opposed to Willis. But again, that gives you a better idea of Murray's ceiling and floor and a shorter contract (again assuming they won't be forced to give a new contract to Murray).
So it really depends on how much Aaron Glenn, the GM, and owner want to tie the team to Malik Willis (who was traded to the Packers for 7th round pick in 2024). Is he a product of the Packers' system? :dunno:

I’ve only seen him play once, against Baltimore this past year.
He looked really good, better than several other starters.
The Ravens defense was 24th in terms of yards allowed, and only had 30 sacks and 11 interceptions last year.
I'm not sure a game against the Ravens defense is the measurement of success from the past.

It is built over an existing public road. No buildings/houses would need to come down. You could do something like this:
Okay, the minimum clearance over top of rail for freight lines is 23 feet 4 inches.
So how exactly does that, with the appropriate rise over run to meet that requirement, work with the roads, parking lots entrances, trees, and power lines?
Assuming they can keep those parking lots for all those businesses open, it will create sightline problems so that the train accidents will likely be replaced with car accidents.
And if they go under it, you still have all sorts of issues with roads, the entrances and then add in potential flooding of the underpass.

9.5% added Tax to all property owners?!
That's what the article says . . . and it's just to fund 3.7 billion of the 11 billion added to the 2027 budget.
And who knows what happens if the bonuses don't come in 24% higher like this year - that helped reduce the current budget shortfall from 12 billion to 5.4 billion short.
Oh yeah, if you didn't read all the way to the end of the story I linked:
quote:
Mamdani had put the deficit at $12 billion just three weeks ago, before the administration counted massive tax revenues, mostly from Wall Street bonuses, which came in 24% higher than last year.
He revealed last week that his budget office winnowed the gap down to $7 billion. Then on Tuesday morning, he said in a post on X, the gap was now down to $5.4 billion.
It's almost like they're fiscally incompetent:

And for an example of how taxing won't necessarily solve their shortfalls:
quote:
“I do not want to raise property taxes,” Mamdani said of his preliminary budget plan, which would hike property taxes 9.5% to raise an additional $3.7 billion in the next fiscal year.
Well that would cover 3.7 out of 11 BILLION in additional spending . . .
