Now that you mention it... I don't think LP has any digital billboards. LOL
Hey, now, we have ONE! On the left as you turn from Juban onto Florida. That may be the only one, though!

Damn. I'd love to hear some juicy LP stories from the 70s/80s. I live in an old neighborhood so theres no telling what used to go down.
Like Jeanne Re's compound in Walker? Start a new post, some folks will tell you stories. '89-91 or so.
Not hearing much chatter around Ard suddenly dropping into the conversation with the LPN editor a remark about an OCS investigation occurring after the creepy sleepover. We know Nak reads this. Lots of questions: is it true at all, is the fact there was one more entity investigating this situation a clue that SOMEONE took it seriously and DID report it elsewhere (and who would that person be? Cop's wife? Perkins' wife at the time?), when did Ard find this out (he said he just heard, but...), was it ethical for him to mention this if you're not supposed to identify a victim (and a minor one at that), and how did he find out about it if it was "closed and expunged"? For someone who is PO'd about rumors, isn't that a big one thrown out there that's unverifiable and just happens to attempt to back up Ard's opinion that no crime occurred? It's around 11:18 into the interview:
LPN/Ard Interview After Press Conference
Also FWIW, 9:30 in is where Ard discusses the supposed affair between the BRPD cop's wife and Perkins. Not sure if anyone is acknowledging this really happened, but it is convenient to cast doubt over the BR cop's motivation for reporting something that "wasn't a crime."

I think the interview with Nakimoto hasn't gone live yet, it was over a half hour long.
The story hit the paper today in Bury St. Edmunds where Rogers' UK dance school was located. It has more details of the charges against him and the media coverage at the time.
LINK
I keep hearing that Rogers was a DEPUTY somewhere (EBRP?). Did no one do a background check on this guy first?

Two guys from the UK called Jim Engster's show this morning and said that Rogers molested them -- one when the guy was just 11, and that he had to go through years of therapy for PTSD. Said Rogers would become violent if you refused his advances. Not much info on his Twitter but may be worth checking back to see if Engster links to the podcast later.

Just bumping to say that the WAFB story on the Bellemont will air tonight at the 6pm broadcast. It was supposed to be be on last night but the news conference about the missing Lafayette cyclist took precedence (as well it should! Sad situation...).
If you miss it, it will be on WAFB's website tomorrow. They are also supposed to be adding a slideshow of some pictures of mine as well as some their guy took and possibly some from the slides I swiped from the safe. I've been adding more to the Flickr set if anyone has an interest. And I'm hoping that Colleen from AbandonedBatonRouge will have her article and pics up soon, too -- she has a teaser up saying that they're coming soon.

Awwww! :( Thanks for joining me over on the FB page -- look forward to hearing your Bellemont stories and hopefully talking to your stepdad soon!
FYI, all: WAFB is postponing the Bellemont piece until 6pm on Tuesday.

Hi, all!
1. The WAFB story on the Bellemont is supposed to run tonight at 10. If you miss it, it'll be on their website tomorrow.
2. I set up a Facebook group for the Bellemont, for people who want to share pictures and stories, to ask questions, to research the mural and its artist, etc. I'm following active discussions about the B. in a couple of locations and thought that the folks talking here might want to talk to the folks over there. It's:
www.Facebook.com/TheBellemont
3. Does anyone know anyone who could potentially save the humongous Italian glass tile mural outside the Pan American Suite? (If it's still standing, that is... it was there Thursday but that doesn't mean anything today.) I'm thinking the Arts Council, or one of the historic preservation societies? It's built into a wall bordering the private pool, so I don't know if that's even possible to do, but the Abandoned Baton Rouge lady asked me to find out.
4. I also registered www.TheBellemont.com but am currently just redirecting it to the Flickr page. I'm working on a kind of memorial website with pictures, interviews with people who worked there or stayed there, etc., but that's going to take a while to develop.
These stories about people who got to meet Cary Grant, John Wayne, etc., or got to be extras in movies thanks to the B. -- I want to hear more!
Also, I came across a story from the early/mid 70s where The Bellemont was used as a regular meeting spot for the Teamsters, who eventually beat to death someone over a concrete contract...? If you have any scoop on this, I'd love to hear it!
Easiest way to find me is to go to the FB group and choose the Message option. I'll try to check back on this post, though.
Have really enjoyed reading this and the other posts here about the B.!

Went back to the Bellemont today, for what I'm thinking will be the last time for me. Rick Portier from WAFB came along, as did Colleen from AbandonedBatonRouge.
I took more pics and am adding them to the flickr account, rearranging them so the 1957 pictures I got from the library are next to the current pictures. Lots more to add.
I swiped the Wheel of Booze today. ;) Got some ribbing from Rick for it, and complete disdain from my husband. "You seriously want to put THAT in our house?" I don't know, I think it's kinda cool. Rick says it was a drink special promo wheel, probably from the 80s based on the prices of the drinks.
I didn't see the Matador pic this trip through. It was ripped and stretched in a few places, doubt it was worth anything. Did find (and keep) a bunch of blank checks and some old stationery and plastic cups with their logo on it.
I say, "swipe," I did slip some green to my pal Charlie. Charlie is a sexy beast. Just sayin'. I'm married, but I ain't dead. ;)
The couch is in great shape at a glance but it is SO nasty from mold and funk... no idea if it could be reupholstered or redone somehow without that horrible stench in it forever.
WAFB's piece is set to run on Sunday, probably the 10:00 newscast, Rick says.
Today we ran into a gentleman who had been a bellhop there at 13 who had shaken John Wayne's hand there "a couple of times," sometime in the 60s, he thought. He was looking to buy some equipment for his restaurant. He's good friends with Billy Cannon and can get you in touch with him if you wanted to ask him about the painting, olegreg.
The huge chandelier in the Great Hall will definitely be sold, it's just a matter of getting it down. I don't know if it's been posted here, but the Great Hall IS going to be demolished after all. It would have been expensive to remodel (with NO copper wiring, so NO electricity), and the current owner, TJ Calloway, has been unable to find an interested investor.
Here's a shortened link to the Flickr pix (many more pictures to be added) for sharing with friends and family who might be interested:

I've been tinkering with the idea of putting up a memorial website to the old Belle -- doing some more research on its history, posting more old pictures, interviewing some of the people who worked or stayed there. There are some interesting stories related to that hotel from what I've heard, including some mob activity.

I wish! I don't think I do, at least, it wasn't the focal point in any of them (the best I can tell, without scanning them) -- it could have been in a background shot, though. Rick from WAFB has the slides right now to see if there's something he can use for his piece and then he's going to return them to me. Melissa at the library says she thinks she may be able to clean off the mold on some of the slides, too.
It was such a beautiful mural -- I wonder if something was written up on it when it was first displayed at the B...our pal Melissa would be the one to ask. I can get to the Advocate's archives at any of the EBRP libraries but she has this awesome master card catalog, yes, still on cards, that has other sources she has in her vast storehouse of a back office. Could be a reference card on Billy Cannon that would direct you to a magazine from back in the day talking about the mural or the artist.

Olegreg -- I'm so glad you got the mural! I was afraid it was lost forever.
I have been going into the Bellemont the last two weekends in a row, and am going back tomorrow with Colleen from AbandonedBatonRouge. The other owner of the demo company, Charlie, took me on a tour on Mother's Day and we went looking for the mural and couldn't find it. There was a section that we couldn't get to because the roof was falling down and that sounds like exactly where it was. I have a suggestion for what to do with it:
The EBRP library has a Baton Rouge Collection on the 4th floor of the River Center branch, and they have a huuuge storage area full of old papers, magazines, city directories, scrapbooks, firemen's logs, and any other artifacts people want to donate for posterity's sake. Talk to Melissa Eastin and tell her Becky Ford sent you. She knows about what we're doing over at the Bellemont and I'm pretty sure she would be thrilled to have the mural!
I'm donating a large, old black and white photo that was in a rotten frame in the lobby, along with some other things that Pat and Charlie let me take. It has water and mold damage but she says they may be able to remove it. I don't know if they can fix the mural, but they would give it a loving, permanent home.
I did a huge set of pics that's up on Flickr if anyone is interested. Some of the places I took pics of on the 13th are already demolished. I was interviewed tonight by Rick Porche of WAFB about some of the historical research I've done on the hotel, along with just some general questions about what I thought about the state it was in, how cool it was at one time, etc.
He also told me that the Great Hall IS going to be demolished after all -- the original plan was to leave it. They're tossing around the idea of making it some kind of gated community. (Show of hands on who thinks that's a good idea??)
He also interviewed the Patrick and a couple who had worked at the hotel for about 15 years who were there yesterday sifting through the rubble, looking for some kind of mementos.

I have more to upload and Colleen will be making an update to ABR with hers after her trip into BR this weekend.
Again, kudos, olegreg! So glad that the mural is safe and sound (well, safe, anyway). ;)
