You’re just talking about baseball right?
And they beat UGA so throughly that year that it finally convinced us to fire Richt and hire Kirby after 15 years.

Can anyone give me the real synopsis on what went wrong?

The most basic possible answer is that when Cyril can’t play (fouls out, gets ejected) we lose. Wilkinson is quietly our best player but Cyril is who the whole operation runs through and his absence is glaring. He has to grow up with his decision making and emotions but he needs more consistent help around him too.

To that same end, we simply do not have anyone other than Wilkinson who can seem to consistently hit 3s. Cain, Smurf, Ross, James all just brick shot after shot and it kills rhythm/momentum and adds even more pressure on Somto to deliver below or risk fouls.

Pieces are there but pretty clear where the cracks are right now
Beats the Crean years when there was no point in tuning in. But this is why I don’t get emotionally invested in this squad; no reason to believe they’ll ever be anything more than fodder for an actual good basketball team making a run through the tourney. Maybe White is basketballs Richt and the next guy down the line will be able to capitalize and advance on a program that is at least back to stable and mostly competitive.
Bad loss on some more stupid shite at the buzzer. Swear to god that end of the floor is cursed.
Dawgs open up at #15 in the D1Baseball preseason rankings
The portal kinda suits baseball and basketball more than football. Dawgs were good last year but had glaring weaknesses both in the mound and in how our offense ran through the long ball. Portal allows us to adapt and change much more quickly year to year rather than 2-3 years having to scout and recruit HS players and develop them into what we need. Still, the youth baseball circuit is already a hyper competitive slog and no denying this just makes it even worse and the road even longer with a shorter time to ply in a place like Athens should you make it that far. Stricklin didn’t have many fans at the HS level and Wes is trending in that same direction, albeit for different reasons.
Season is about a month away so I figured I'd get this thing started back up.

Another bizarre schedule but can't argue the results as we've been a national seed the past 2 years.

No Clemson, no Mercer, no Ga Southern. Only 1 game against Tech in Truist (though still likely not going to have TV coverage).

We only play 4 road games before April (only 16 true road games total all year). Wes making it a point to play and win inside our own park.

Conference schedule is once again a murderers row. We avoid Texas and Vandy on the schedule but catch every other preseason ranked SEC squad (LSU, Tennessee, Arkansas, MSU, Auburn, & Florida) plus Ole Miss and A&M which will ikely end up ranked at some point (South Carolina and Mizzou are the only two that may reliably suck).

The team is once again full of a lot of new faces. Branch, Phelps, and Jackson all return which is a big deal but, otherwise, we've got a fresh group of portal names to learn - albeit some good ones:
1. Kenny Ishikawa will likely be our leadoff man and could be a midweek starter or bullpen arm, depending on how Wes wants to use him
2. Phelps likely going to be the 2 or 4 hole, depending on matchups
3. Branch may be a solid 3 or 5. 3rd year in the SEC and his final year in college, I expect him to mash
4. Bryce Calloway is already garnering some preseason all-american buzz, start at 1B and can pitch righty as well
5. Jackson could honestly bat anywhere from the 2-5 spot, he knocked the cover off the ball in cape cod and looked friggin great in Fall ball. He'll play C and OF
6. Jack Arcamone is likely going to end up an outfield starter, platooning with Jackson at C. Experienced bat with rare speed on the bases for a Catcher
7-9. Could see a mix of guys in these spots, especially early on: Ryan Black, Ryan Wynn, TL Saxon, Jordy Oriach, Scott Newman, Cole Johnson, Brennan Hudson, Cole Koniarsky, Michael O'Shaugnessy. Lot of options.

Around the horn, I'd guess:

Catcher: Jackson, Arcamone, Hudson
1B: Calloway, Oriach, Hudson
2B: Black, Wynn
SS: Branch, Lujo
3B: Phelps, O'Shaugnessy
LF: Arcamone, Johnson
CF: Ishikawa, Newman
RF: Koniarsky, Johnson
DH: Oriach, Hudson

Pitching will be almost completely new. In addition to Ishikawa, odds on starters are likely to be Joey Volchko and Matt Scott from Stanford, Caden Aoki from USC, maybe Justin Byrd from last year (though he could also be our primary middle relief arm). Would wager Jordan Stephens is our closer, assuming he has his control issues from last year in check. All in all, should be a bit of a front end upgrade at least in experience and stuff. Too, we have a bit better split between Lefty/Right arms - 6 Lefties to 17 Righties. Last year we went a while with only 1 available lefty in Alton Davis after Goldstein went down.

Hard to gauge what this team will ultimately do at this point but fair to set expectations around a host spot again and modify as we gather information. From fall ball, the offensive makeup at least seems to be a lot more reliant on putting balls in play and good base running than just mashing and hoping to out gorilla the other team (and our arms).

Fine I’ll watch Delirious again
He’s shown to be a hothead dating back to last season. Florida won’t be the last team to try to bait him into it, he’s got to grow up

We’re toast. Thanks Somto, fricking idiot
Oh we’re fricked. Someone had better start draining 3s cause this is about to get out of hand.

Thanks Somto
His own fault. When we end up losing this one, it’ll be his to own
Nah he knew what he was doing. He tried to restrain last second but the intent was there

Somto gone. His temper is the only thing keeping him from being dominant
God dammit Somto. His temper is going to kill us down the stretch

That UF vs UGA line is crazy considering they're 13-1 and we just lost to Mizzou cause we're such an awful shooting team that a simple zone defense destroys us.

Reflection of our non-con and lack of true road games. Blew out FSU on the road but they’re a 7-8 team that can’t do anything but chuck up 3s. Beat mediocre Xavier and Cincy teams, lost in OT to a decent Clemson team on a neutral court.

Got a lot to prove tonight despite the solid start to the year.
He was a non-factor at UGA. Didn’t recruit well, didn’t really elevate any receivers that he did have (Pickens was the most notable guy in that room and he was a James Coley guy, not Hankton). Monken made up for a lot of his shortcomings both in coordinating and coaching, rumored to have lost the WR room in 2021 (when we won the first natty) which is why he made a quick exit to LSU in 2022.

Damn that was fun. Frustrating and agonizing at times but that’s what good basketball does to you. Great way to fill an early afternoon before some meaningful NFL games tonight

Why doesn’t UGA have more success? It’s right in one of the most populated metro areas. It seems like they could take who they want from Atlanta. Is HS bball not good in the metro? Is it a lack of commitment from the athletic department/boosters? It seems like a sleeping giant with the inherent advantages.

quote:

Why aren’t we better at baseball too?

Our athletic department basically went from being one of the very best in the country from 2000-2008 to sitting on its hands for the next 13 years under piss poor management from Famon Evans and Greg McGarity (both hires made by our former President Michael Adams who intentionally handicapped Athletics so it would not outshine academics).

While everyone else in conference was improving facilities we did quite literally nothing for football, basketball, and baseball. Only within the last 5 or so years hve we finally caught back up or pulled ahead (depending on sport) in facilities (tennis, baseball, softball, track, football, and basketball have all received expansions or larger scale renovations) and only in the last 3 years have we replaced the mediocre hires in baseball, basketball, gymnastics, soccer, track, and volleyball with actual competent coaches.
