re: IM looking forward to the A-Day game - Will we win?

I’ve watched the Georgia and a&m spring games and a good bit of Florida and Bama. Everyone had some pretty sloppy play, OL’s struggling pretty badly and QB’s struggling and 3 of those 4 are all in the same system. Definitely not worth overreacting to a spring game. We definitely have a long, long way to go, but the struggles yesterday have not been unique to us.

Will Golesh tell the defensive coordinator to start going easy on the quarterbacks to build their confidence? That worked great last season.
He’s done the opposite actually. Told them to throw the kitchen sink at them.

Oh forgot, McPherson looked solid, much stronger than last year. If he can keep getting healthier, that will be a great sign.

wouldn’t expect anything more from Byrum than was expected going into year 2 for Nick Marshall. Very good runner poor passer but a playmaker. So protecting the football is essential.
He didn’t play nearly as well, but in reality it wasn’t terribly different than Cam’s spring game. Cam didn’t play that much, but was like 3-8 passing. Not saying Byrum is or will be that but both guy’s running ability is so important to their play, it gets everything into a rhythm. So until we really get under the lights, going to be hard to know what we truly got. He made some really bad plays today though. Nothing was unfixable though. Just shouldn’t have been making them in the first place.

We need to seriously work on the Centers. Disasters waiting to happen.
Yea they struggled a lot with the snap. Was very strange.

Yea as I said earlier, offense definitely looked like it was still installing itself and really didn’t do very much other than a lot of base stuff. Byrum’s very first drive he missed one throw down the seam, was a difficult throw/window and he missed safely. Then overthrew Nimrod on a deep sideline route that he abused the CB. Looked like he may have checked up at first. First drive was cooking until then. He had some really dumb throws but had some good placement on others. If he was allowed to run, he would have had some very big plays too. He can just flat out move.
Ti’a didn’t take a lot of deep shots, but he was decisive and efficient with the ball. Showed good mobility as well. He looks like a solid backup and could develop into a decent QB.
RB’s o really don’t have any complaints with. All had some good play and not many TFL’s. Saw some good blitz pickup form a number of guys, even when the OL got whipped or massively outnumbered. One of Brown’s longer passes to Singleton only happens because I think Mabson just lit up a rusher.
WR’s I think were my biggest pleasant surprise, mostly with how physical they were blocking and how much they attacked the ball. Saw a good variety of routes get catches, even some slants and crossing routes on third down with a blitz in the qb’s face. Guys caught the balls with their hands and were looking to get yards.
OL - not sure how to judge yet with guys out. I thought run blocking was okay, guys had holes and blockers onto the second level decent. Pass plays had some breakdowns but had some good play as well. They were dealing with a lot of pressure from Durkin, stunts, backside LB and DB blitzes, and hard rushing the ends because the QB wasn’t running. They definitely need to improve, no question, but having watched most of Florida and Bama’s spring games, theirs didn’t look comparatively much more impressive either.
Defense - we definitely have some talent. I thought our Ends played well, Jared Smith will be a problem. His Interception was a fantastic play, even if it was a very bad throw from Brown. LB’s I thought played well and attacked. Deas is going to be real good as he keeps developing.
DB’s seemed to play the ball pretty well when they were in position. Had two tip interceptions (though one called off because of penalty elsewhere) I can’t remember the last time we had one of those. The one the holding penalty erased where Fegans tipped the ball up and Woodby picked it was just impressive.
Overall, it very much looked like a practice. Definitely have a ways to go but there was for sure a lot of glimpses of what the good can be and look like.

Yea I mean if you watch the game they had against UF last year, he had no problem just taking off. I think when he is in a real game mode, he will roll out more and take off quicker.

Brown’s scrambles were cut short today.
Yep, he had at least 2 td’s cut short and another run that would have easily been 30+ called for almost nothing.

Offense definitely still looked like they are installing a new offense. Some things I definitely liked and clearly things to work on. Receivers did a good job coming back and attacking balls, lots of good hand catching, and blocking. Not a lot of non-hustle penalties which was good to see.

Durkin isn’t holding much back they are throwing everything at the offense.
This I’ve loved seeing. He has been blitzing from everywhere. Switching coverages at snap. It’s been a great look for our O.
And yea, when Brown is able to run and we are calling stuff thabuses his legs more, it completely changes the O.
Big 55 yard field goal by McPherson. Plenty of room.

He definitely didn’t inspire much today. Don’t know if it was his decision making that caused it or play calling was part of it but seems like much longer developing stuff compared to 2nd O. Looked quick as hell on the runs but his passing was bad.

Spencer is going to be a good one. He has been all over the place. Blocking on the outside has been good as well.

I’ll give two to just great plays by the defense with fantastic tip ball drills. Not good throws per se but the defense made great plays on them.

Good drive there by 2nd O. Spencer looked good and nice run there for the TD by Davenport.

He is taking forever to make decisions and then throwing very late. Ti’a is throwing quick balls, hitting screens, etc.

Ooof Brown two bad plays out of half, two great plays by Deas. Blitzed around end and caused sack first play and then dropped into coverage and got INT on next. Bad throw.

McPherson has definitely looked a lot healthier in his kicks. Showing a lot more elevation on them.

I’ve already printed the banner.
I think WR’s have looked really solid, don’t think I’ve seen any drops that weren’t overthrows. Rb’s have as well. Mabson and Washington have had some really good blitz pickups. OL has done decent on run blocking, been inconsistent with pass protection. Hard to judge some as Brown has had plays with a ton of running room or ones where he’d obviously pull on the read but isn’t because they are actively not running him. His passing has been very up and down.
Ti’a has looked better than I thought he would. One very bad read on a throw that he didn’t see a defender but otherwise has been decisive.
