Of course I meant Mike Schula's QB's not Sloan's. Sorry about that!

I am extremely sick of hearing from all the Saban jock sniffers who will never understand that SABAN IS GONE, HE WILL NEVER BE BACK!!!!Please get off of that FINALLY!! Besides, LSU should have beaten Alabama the last two years. In 2008, but for a freshman QB throwing three picks, the last in overtime, LSU would have won. And in 2009, LSU was ahead until our starting Soph. QB left the game, and our all-American CB left the game, and an Alabama "homer" re-play official "missed" a call that everyone else in America knew was wrong. But in both of those victories, and both of his undefeated seasons and his SEC and NC, he had an advantage over everyone else....he was playing with STEVE SLOAN RECRUITED QUARTER BACKS!!! Neither one was recruited by Saban. Both are high character guys, with excellent skills. Why don't we give the credit for Saban's two undefeated seasons to the coach who rightfully deserves it....Steve Sloan, because Saban actually won with Sloan's players, not his own??!!
He was also being recruited by D.J. McCarthy, who invited him for a second visit to the July camp. Obviously, at that time some of D.J.'s unfortunate mistakes began to surface, and the kid fell through the cracks. He has letters from most of the SEC recruiters, plus many of the Big 12 schools. He was waiting for the LSU offer he thought would come from D.J., and didn't respond to the letters. Looking at highlight films is fine but they do not accurately reveal the measure of the player. For that you need to be there. One of the things you didn't see on the tapes was his blocking ability and his aggressiveness which are outstanding. But you may have revealed the true reason for some of the absolutely false assertions by some on this thread...the "residual anti-Evangel bias". I was certainly hopeful that mess was over with, when a certain Louisiana (2 star) player turned down Mac Brown's offer in favor of LSU and helped us win a NC.

"Scarey", "Risk", "Project", Some of the words used to describe Eric Thomas, THE TIMES' offensive MVP, First Team All-State, First Team All-American, starting WR on Evangel's State Championship Football Team, conquerer of John Curtis in which he caught 11 passes for over 100yds, over the middle, outside, etc., 6'2.5", 205 lbs., John Curtis a team no South Louisiana team could beat in the last 2 years. Has over a 3.0 GPA, and has a qualifying ACT according to one of the Evangel Coaches. "But he has only 2 Stars" "He has no scholarship offers". My understanding, for various reasons he is very difficult to contact, and if a recruiter can't get in touch with him, he won't offer him. Les did it right, he went to see him. He plays multiple sports at Evangel, and is an exceptional basketball player. He is a very devout Christian, and is very "coachable" young man. In other words he is not a "hot shot" who goes around beating his own PR drum. He has played against many of the top 5-A programs (Those who would play Evangel) in the state, and NO ONE COULD STOP HIM. If you have seen him play, you can legitimately critique him. Don't base your opinion on those who haven't. He is the real deal, like Jacob Hester, like John David Booty, like Brock Berlin, like Abram Booty.
Nuts. I realize some posters are also young and inexperienced and say things on this Rant to get a rise out of the readers. That's OK. But the QB position in football, more than any other position in any other sport, requires "seasoning". To ridicule the age or experience of a QB as having a negligible effect on his success, only reflects the lack of knowledge of the Ranter. The QB position is the only position which requires a complete knowledge of the plays, the positions of all the players, and the assignments of each on every play. Missing a "Read" on a play, or a blocking "Assignment" of a player results in a sack, or worse, an interception. Hours and hours of time are spent studying the defenses and tendencies of all of the opponents in preparing for the game, and in preparing the game plans. Audibles, protections and progressions are prepared for each play, and they are memorized. In the SEC, LSU competes against the finest athletes in the world, who are highly skilled at their respective positions, and highly motivated by exceptional coaches and radical and loudly vocal fan bases, just like those on this rant. In the four games LSU lost this season, all four opponents had fourth year starters at QB. One starter, a fourth year junior, and consensus preseason All-American, and rated 5th in preseason Heisman Polls, had 20 interceptions along with his 20 touchdown passes. Realistically, right now, JJ has Average Knowledge and Skills FOR A FOURTH YEAR QUARTERBACK IN THE SEC. Because of the invaluable experience he gained this year, he will be regarded as the NUMBER 1 JUNIOR QUARTERBACK IN THE SEC NEXT YEAR. IF HE STAYS AT LSU FOR HIS SENIOR YEAR, HIS ATHLETIC SKILLS COUPLED WITH HIS INTELLIGENCE FAR EXCEED ANYTHING WE HAVE HAD AT LSU IN A LONG TIME, AND HE WILL BE THE FAVORITE TO BE THE ALL-SEC QB. Most of the ranters talk about JR with a kind of prayerful admiration. His problem at LSU and the Raiders is the inability or lack of desire to learn the system. JJ has already surpassed anything JR ever understood about the LSU offensive system. JR was drafted #1 because of his arm, not his head. To answer the question posed, JJ is not only an exceptional SEC QB, but with some patience and guidance, in two years he'll be the best of the SEC QB's.
I agree, the punter, several linemen, and the other wide receiver are all prospects at Evangel. But LSU needs wide receivers, and this guy, to me, stands head and shoulders above anything I've seen in Louisiana this year. He seems to have all the tools in one package, size, hands and speed and I saw him help up one of his Curtis tacklers. Come on!!! I don't know anything about his grades or ACT scores, but surely something could be done to get him to LSU.

Eric Thomas, WR, Evangel.

If we have such a desperate need for wide receivers, this guy is right under our nose. He was the Offensive MVP for the Shreveport Times, First team All-State, and a MAX-Prep.com first team All-American in the small school category along with La'el Collins,Kenny Hilliard, Walker Ashburn, Rasco of Evangel and D.J. Welter. Nick Jacobs and Curtis's Charpentier were on the MAX-Prep 2nd team All-American team. He's 6'2.5, 205, and according to Scout runs a 4.5. I watched all of the state championship games in the Super Dome and he was the best I saw. Curtis couldn't cover him. Am I missing something here??
tlary: Agree and disagree.
1) Ole Miss- Gorilla in room never discussed was that Coaches had given up on game and never BELIEVED JJ would complete last 2 passes to put LSU in position to win. Worse than that was not running up the middle when in position to win with field goal, rather than running with inexperienced t-back and taking chance on sack. Time would have expired, and last second melt down would never have occurred.
2)Agree.
3)Disagree.."Slant" pass would have been good choice at end of game and would have increased chance of first down, thus clock stoppage. Bubble screen in Bowl was bad choice because relied on line getting down field in mud to provide "Bubble" blocks for WR who was supposed to run behind blockers. Created mass confusion instead, and time ran down.
4)Disagree...QB could not run straight down the line because of defense penetration. To run option successfully requires outstanding O-Line, which we didn't have. But JJ has never learned how to properly run an option, which is not his fault.
5)Disagree..fourth and 1 INCH with our O-Line, you take what you can get. Kick the FG! Remember Ciron Black getting his A-- kicked by ULL? You kick the FG!
6)Agree 100% ie La. Tech! They couldn't stop the run, we couldn't pass because of rush.
7)Disagree and agree depending on what you mean by Pressure. But do agree that Tight ends were inexplicably left out of game plan at end of year and were under utilized.
8)Disagree...must always assume the Ark. coaches will make adjustments to remove foot from throat. Smart coaches figure how Ark. will adjust, and plan to counter move. Only time to adjust is halftime. Can't waive opportunity.
9)Agree if your point is we don't provide enough pressure on QB with DL. Pressure must come every play. ie don't recall ever seeing us use the Zone Blitz, and I know our DE's have pass coverage responsibility in some defenses.
10)I'm sure you're being facetious because I don't ever recall our CB's 10yds off the line except in a "prevent" situation. But I agree that when we are in a "Blitz" of any kind, a hands on press coverage must be applied to the receivers and unfortunately, we don't do that.
11)Agree 50%...Randle played substantial time for a freshman. Shep was under utilized. Shep is determined to play QB, and has difficulty in reading defenses and setting protections as any first year QB does. The coaches do not want to put him in the position to fail like they did with JL when he was thrown into the fire unprepared. But I agree there was no excuse why the coaches couldn't prepare a "10 play wildcat-type package" for Shep that would involve roll out run-pass options. That would involve minimal turnover risk and would utilize his exceptional talents. After all, we saw in the Spring game 2009, he really can pass. JJ certainly has the better arm, but Shep is an exceptional runner and could definitely help the offense. To have his talent on the sideline, while the offense is struggling is inexplicable.

YES to Coach Miles.
YES to LSU Football.
NO to Coach STUD. What HS offensive lineman wants to hear..."Coach Stud will be your position coach for the next 4 years", obviously not a picture of hard work and conditioning. Could this be the problem in recruiting top offensive lineman? You think?????
Roger: Aaron Brooks never started a game at Virginia until he had THREE years to prepare to start. HE WAS A RED SHIRT JUNIOR. When JJ was recruited, he understood that RP was the RED SHIRT JUNIOR STARTER, and that JL a red shirt freshman was his back up. JJ was ready to be redshirted himself. When RP started the Middle Tenn. game, and the SEC CG in '07, he had two full years to prepare BEFORE HE WAS THROWN TO THE WOLVES. For an SEC QB to start an SEC game takes considerable preparation, USUALLY YEARS. Matt Flynn became the starter in his FIFTH year. Matt Mauck in his fourth, then got hurt, Randall took over, thus the loss in the Cotton Bowl. JJ NEVER WAS GRANTED THE LUXURY OF EVEN A YEAR TO PREPARE. Three months after he showed up at LSU, he was the STARTING QB FOR THE LSU TIGERS.
The complaints you rattle off ie "staring down receivers, throwing behind receivers, etc. reveals a lack of knowledge of the position. Those are complaints frequently cited by ESPN announcers, who also know nothing about the position. A QB throws through his offensive line, and the defensive line in what are referred to as "Passing Lanes". That's the open spaces between the players and the defense's raised arms. Unfortunately, those passing lanes are constantly moving and changing because the players are moving and changing. The coverages can be man or zone and most of the time they are disguised. Additionally, the LSU receivers are moving in split seconds through the passing lanes and between the zones, and multiple coverages. These many variables faced by an SEC QB prevent each and every pass being delivered like you do in your back yard. In addition the pass rushers are trying to maim the QB and his choice of receivers must be made in 3 seconds from the snap of the ball. He usually has 3 progressions (Choices of receivers) and if he picks the wrong one it may result in an interception which will lose the game. Then he will receive unbelievable criticism from people on this Rant who know absolutely nothing about what he has had to sacrifice in order to be able to try his best to play for them. Then they are critical of him because he is not playing like a professional athlete and worse, that he's not white.
No less than Charles Scott has called JJ a great "Leader". Who has told you that he isn't?
If no one, how do you even make that statement? It seems you are one of those people who makes ridiculous and totally irresponsible statements simply to elicit a response. Criticizing a player because of his color happened 50 years ago, but not today. Those of us affiliated with LSU know it for what it is. And it shouldn't be tolerated in any publication, blog or otherwise that alleges an association with LSU.
You don't know anything about his courage, and you obviously know nothing about his leadership abilities. Those are character attributes which should never be the subject matter of an internet discussion. The very fact that they are being discussed indicates a lack of character on the part of those who are questioning his character.
JJ is an exceptional kid who has accomplished a lot in a relatively short period of time. He is intelligent, he's fast, has a great arm, is very coachable, attends his classes, and has no interest in fake id's or going to casinos. He loves LSU and wants to be here. Be thankful for who we have, and not wish for someone we don't have.
Alabama retains its QB, 2 RB's (Including a Heisman winner), and its top receiver. It loses the strength of the offensive and defensive lines, its linebackers, its top defensive back, kick returner and both kickers. Florida loses a Heisman QB, and its middle linebacker. Both teams needed all of that to beat LSU. LSU's weaknesses, (Off. and Def. lines) will be improved. The def. backs will be the best in the SEC. The defense overall will be one of the best in the country.
We have some terrific young linemen
who possess both size and talent. We will need to replace 3 excellent linebackers, but the cupboard is far from bare.
JJ was statistically recognized as the third best QB in the league this year. Snead failed to live up to pre-season expectations. Sacks count against the stats of the off. line. With Tebow graduated, he'll go into next year as the second rated behind only Alabama's QB. With another year, and an improved offensive line, he should shine next year. Shep has had considerable difficulty in practice reading defenses and setting protections at QB. Another year will help him debut as the LSU wildcat QB. With the graduation of Holliday, he will also debut as the LSU speed back. Michael Ford is also the real deal, and he will debut in the spring game.
12-0 takes talent, but also luck, as you saw with Alabama this year. We always have some injuries to key people. We'll go 10-2. If we beat Alabama, we'll be in Atlanta, and we should do so. We'll be in the Sugar Bowl. :geauxtigers: :geauxtigers: :geauxtigers:
It never ceases to amaze how ranters continue to ignore logic in favor of impossible fantasy. i.e.
1) SABAN IS FOREVER GONE, HE WILL NEVER, EVER BE THE COACH AT L.S.U. EVER AGAIN. Please, get over it! Saban left L.S.U., we didn't fire him. Yet often he was heavily criticized after losses that these same ranters, at that time, swore could have been won by better coaches. He lost two bowl games, one due to poor QB play, the other due to poor coaching by his defensive backs coach. Who was that? Saban himself! But just as he did in the Sugar Bowl last year, he deflected any personal responsibility from himself, and threw his players under the bus.

2) So you can't have Saban, who do you suggest we hire? Since our crazy fan base would have been critical of Jesus for not serving a salad and gumbo at the Last Supper, please give us a name of an established coach who would want to endure such BS. We have had 3 National Championship Football coaches. Two had enough, and left. Please name another NC coach who WANTS to come to LSU. Good Luck!

3) We had a FIVE TIME NC baseball coach, who was criticized for being too old by ranters when he didn't win the CWS in 2001.

4) During Saban's tenure at LSU, there was constant bickering and turmoil within the coaching staff, just as there has been at Alabama since his arrival. Coaches are prone to leave when they are unhappy, and Saban's history of retaining coaches is not good.

5) Saban has well documented character flaws, not the least of which is an inability to tell the truth.

6) He's a great football coach.

7) Fact: At this moment in time LSU has a National Championship Coach, who has won a higher percentage of his games at LSU than any other Coach who preceeded him, including Saban. He is a family man who really attends and supports his family's events. He is honest and demands honesty from his players. Although he gives second chances to players who violate the rules, he expects players to fulfill their promises, and accept responsibility when they don't. I.E. RP. His demand for discipline, and constant vigilence over the integrity of the program certainly cost him some victories when he removed RP from the program. That action is the only thing that prevented the "victory competition" between him and Saban from being a slam dunk in favor of Miles. He supports his coaches, and despite the demands from media, will never make derogatory comments about them, even if absolutely true ( 2008 Co-def. coordinators). This inspires loyalty and a good working relationship with his coaches.

8) He gets nervous during highly competitive games, and becomes a terrible time manager.(Auburn 2007, Ole Miss 2009)

9) By all measurable standards, Les Miles is a great football coach as well, with great character assets, who we are very lucky to have.

10) The answer: Next year, the winner of the Alabama-LSU game will win the west. 2011, LSU will win the SEC, and have a shot at the NC. That would mean 2003, 2007, 2011 (Every 4 years) magical years.
1st Play....I Formation, Ridley dots the I, JJ hands off to Ridley over left tackle...2 yards
2nd Play....JJ keeps running on option to short side of the field, never stops, pitches to Holiday (Could just as easily handed off) both defenders covering QB and Pitch Man, could make play, but Holiday beats them to Sideline...-2 yards.
3rd Play.....JJ time to pass, 5-step drop, hits LaFell on slant directly on his number "1", drops ball and complains sun in his eyes; unfortunately, clouds and rain are obscuring any sun light.
4th Play.....Punt :banghead:
