re: The psychology of nicotine addiction

What's so good about nicotine. Does it give you as good of a feeling as being buzzed from alcohol?
It's like any other drug. First time makes you feel sick, the next bunch of times it makes you feel good, after a while there's little effect... and then you need it to just feel normal. Hell of a thing.
There are some small benefits from nicotine. It can help with small nervous system problems. Some folks say it enhances. It's a appetite suppressant, which is why so many people gain weight when they quit.

Marvin Lewis coached the Bengals for 16 years and never had a playoff win.
That should tell you enough.

Why don't seagulls fly over the bay?
Because if they did, they'd be Bagels

You've heard of Moore's law, right? That technology doubles in a given timeframe.
You've also heard of Murphy's law, right? What can go wrong will go wrong.
Are you familiar with Cole's law? No? It's finely grated cabbage with an oil or mayonnaise based dressing.

Wild to think every coach of Steelers has a ring
The Steelers were objectively the worst NFL franchise from their origination until 1969 when they hired Noll. there are 13 Steelers coaches to not win a title.
If you're talking just the Super Bowl era, the first Super Bowl was two years before Noll was hired. Bill Austin was a coach during the Super Bowl era and doesn't have a ring.

That is a crazy stat. Not even someone going to the college rankings?
None. No head coaches have elevated through his staff. He typically hired retreads or guys that flamed out and didn't get considered for elevated roles.
He was big on hiring guys that had been fired in other places, like Tyrel Austin and Arthur Smith. His first several years 2007-2010 he just had Bill Cowher's old staff. They eventually moved on and he filled them with guys that had experience elsewhere. He never hired young and developed staff. The few guys that worked through the Steelers org and became OC's or DC's like Randy Fichter, were originally hired under Cowher.

I'm grateful for his time as coach and that amazing SB win as well as being competitive on a yearly basis, but it was time. I'll always be a Steelers fan first, but will root for him as well if he decides to coach elsewhere.
I have been very anti-Tomlin for the past 5 years, just because it was time. He missed the window in the mid-2010's with Ben in his prime and didn't manage to make a Super Bowl with that roster. When that window closed and it was time for somewhat of a rebuild and the Steelers went into an extended .500 mode it was time to move on.
I appreciate his time, but am excited for a new start. Things were obviously stale. If he coaches again, he'll do well and a new locker room will definitely benefit him. In the end it was time for him and the organization to start anew.

Bruce Arians? He had one year in Indy before jumping to the Cardinals
Arians was the Wide Receivers coach and OC for Bill Cowher. Tomlin inherited him from his staff. His first NFL experience was on Marty Schottenheimer's staff for a handfull of years in the early 90's, he coached there with Cowher.
Both he and Cowher are in Schottenheimer's tree.

Likely a mutual decision from both parties. He’s a good coach, but it was time.
19 Seasons and he'll leave a completely empty coaching tree. I don't think that's ever happened.

What's crazy to think about, is that if Stanford alum had any affinity for football no one would be able to step up to them. -- Stanford currently has 93 alumni that are billionaires with an estimated combined net worth of around $4+ Trillion. :scared:
Cal could be dangerous too if they cared, they have an estimated 21 billionaire alumni.

Ben was the quarterback for 6 consecutive playoff losses. He has to bear some responsibility for those.
Ben was only the QB for four of the seven playoff losses. Rudolph, Rodgers and Wilson were the other three.
During the last 4 playoff games that Ben played the Steelers defense gave up 36 (Patriots), 45 (Jaguars), 48 (Browns) and 42 (Chiefs) points. The offense under him scored 17, 42, 37 and 21 points.
It was definitely not Ben that was the issue.

Houston has won a playoff game, tanked, rebuilt, and won another playoff game since the last time the Steelers won a playoff game.

This idea that Tomlin "has been handed..."
The only thing I'll entertain regarding Tomlin being handed anything is that to start his career he was handed a roster with multiple hall of famers and Bill Cowhers entire coaching staff that was one year removed from a Super Bowl win. Ever since he filtered those guys out and got his guys in there, it’s been a mess.

I'm not sure what he's supposed to do when they've had such mediocre QB play for so long.
He had a hall of fame QB in his prime until his decline in 2018. From 2010 on he won 3 playoff games with him.

I don't care whether he gets fired or not, it could be justified, but the roster was not that good this year.
I've been hearing about the roster issues and what a good job Tomlin did with what he had for 15 years worth of letdowns. He has input and final say on his roster. He has the most expensive defense in the NFL and they signed key guys because he wanted them. Every team has roster deficiencies, it how the league works.
It's time for a fresh start for both him and the franchise.

- First Steelers coach ever without a playoff victory in 9 seasons
The last time the Steelers won a playoff game it was over an A.J. McCarron quarterbacked Bengals.
3 playoff wins since 2010... 15 years and 3 playoff wins. Two of those three playoff wins came against teams starting backup QBs. Matt Moore and A.J. McCarron. The Begals would have won that game too if Vontaze Burfict didn't go crazy and take Antonio Brown's head off.
