Glad I could be of help. I like to say I've got redneck ingenuity. My wife reminds me that I'm not smart, I just grew up broke??

2k for attic install (unit included) is pretty standard.
Be prepared for the plumber to be in and out in less than 3 hours. It took me longer to drain the old one than to get it disconnected and out the attic.
Pro tip: if you diy, buy one of the stainless steel connector kits from HD. Connect one of the connector hoses direct from hot to cold and use it as a handle to pull it up the attic stair.
Game changer when you swap one out by yourself

Cat6a for the cable. Cat 7 rating is still not recognized by the TIA (ie the rating is not legitimate/tested). 6A will handle 10GBps, your network equipment couldn't outrun it.
I've had good luck with navepoint racks, nothing fancy but they get the job done.
I personally wouldn't recommend wall mount, especially if you are going to end up putting a ups in there.
Couple personal tips ive learned from building commercial buildings...
1. Put a pipe or two in at your headend rack. Easiest and cheapest way to do this is use a couple 2" PVC pipes stubbed out the wall/ceiling into the attic. Cheaper than conduit, better than smurf tube.
2. Put 2 separate duplex outlets at your rack, on 2 separate circuits.
3. Include a ups in your build, will save you tons of headache from power blips making your whole system power cycle.
4. Run data for cameras, even if you aren't going to put them initially. Way easier during construction.
5. If you want everything in a rack, investigate IR repeaters. Dumb thing to overlook. Can be done over cat6.
6. Include a NAS. My entire life is filed on mine. Every car maintenance receipt, healthcare receipt, important docs, all family pics, etc. In a file structure like God intended.

re: Long HDMI run?

The remote access thru the mac mini is the way to go.
Second option would be hdmi over cat6. You would need a converter to go from the HDMI out to the cat6 wire and back again.

re: Any of y'all been burned loaning a family member or friend money?
Posted by baseballmind1212 on 2/7/26 at 9:44 pm to Cregg
Yep. Unfortunately I have burnt 500 bucks or less a couple times with my wife's family. A few times involved famiy vacations and the splitting of costs. One time was for some material use for some home repairs.
We got out that game when one of her sisters asked for help replacing the ac condenser unit at hour house. Asked if I could just buy it and she would pay me back over time for parts cost... After I already agreed installing it for free.
We bought her a window unit and called it her Christmas gift. Drew the line there to never lend family money or buy materials for home repairs without cash in hand first. I'll do the labor for free all day, but not 1 dollar is coming out of my account towards fixes/improvements in their homes.

re: How long does the OT usually keep a vehicle?

Averaging 12 years in my house.
Mines('17 silverado) currently 9 years and 200k miles in. Will likely push this one a little farther as I have very few issues with it so far. Only major thing I have done is replace the ac condenser at about 100k.

Fre is the best ive found. Keep their flavor forever, which has help me cut way back.
One of the good things about Houston, I've tried damn near every brand. Used to be on the rogues but for some reason they tore my gums up.
Second nicokick. Way cheap.

8th grade, trying to keep from killing a little brother. Dreaming about what it would be like to be an adult and not have to listen to my parents stupid rules.
My dad reminds me every day that God gave me girls for a reason. It's payback for all the hell I raised.

As another said, get tested for sleep apnea
I had it so bad weed gummies were the only thing that could get me to stay asleep.
Couldn't figure out why I was still exhausted after sleeping hard on weed gummies. Turns out they kept me asleep but made the sleep apnea worse.

re: What do you plan on doing with your year end bonus?
Posted by baseballmind1212 on 1/5/26 at 3:47 pm to fareplay
Get ours mid March.
Company had a great year, records profits, C-Suite bought a jet, opened and outfitted a new fancy office.
I'm expecting the same or less bonus than usual
10% goes to the wife, 30% to the tax man, 60% to the HYSA.
I need a new roof, A/C unit is <15y old, got a kid starting college in two years, and a truck with 200k miles
Got to stack it up while I can.

re: If you were 18 & going to college in todays environment, what major/career would yo go to?
Posted by baseballmind1212 on 12/27/25 at 8:39 pm to ShunnedHuman
CM Degree, work in power generation/data center or water/waste water for those that want to enjoy their college.
Mech E or EE for those that want to grind their way thru school.
My Cm degree and subsequent work experience has put me in a better position than most people I know. School was relatively easy/low stress and the types of work you can go into is endless.

my wife has bitched the last 3 years about or roofline not having lights. Everytime I offer to hold the ladder for her while she it's em up. 3 years running and she still hasn't taken me up on it.
re: Electrical help - arc fault circuit interrupting breaker doesn’t always want to reset.
Posted by baseballmind1212 on 11/20/25 at 8:47 pm to Theduckhunter
Sounds like you are at or near peak amperage allowance.
It's like a sub par breaker. If you have the same breakers in the same panel, and aren't experiencing any issues, then you probably need to swap it out.
Sounds like you have load tested it. If you don't want to pay for a new one, try swapping another arc fault breaker in the panel. If it results in the same issues, then the load is the problem.

re: Expected Costs Question for Contractors
Posted by baseballmind1212 on 11/9/25 at 4:31 pm to Skenes
You looking to save money? Or are you trying to make sure they include everything done the right way in their quote?
A few questions off the top....
Does your price include the following:
Wire welded mesh (if it's going to be used for a patio)
#3 rebar (if used for parking)
Demo and removal/dispose of existing concrete
How much excavation/compacted fill are you including.
Thickness of concrete (4" for a patio, 5" for a parking area)
Don't let them talk you into just compacting the soil that's there. The shite is sinking for a reason
Also don't let them talk you into using fiber reinforced in lieu of mesh/rebar. It's not as good. It's just way easier for them if they don't have to install reinforcement.
Your going to pay some money on this. That is not a small amount of work. 30k given the scope is about what I'd expect.

What happens legally in this instance if the homeowner starts shooting?
No warrant, wrong house, entering unlawfully, at night.
I'm shooting. Not saying that it won't most likely end badly for me, but would I go to jail if I survive?

re: Battery Charging Station Ideas

Mounted a piece of plywood in the garage.
Mounted heavy duty power strip connected via smart power monitor to plywood.
Screwed my 3 chargers for my power tools to the plywood, added a couple USB pd chargers, and built a little shelf under it to hold anything that didn't have a keyhole mount.
All my batteries, chargers, in one spot taking up about 2'x2'. It's stupid simple. Yet very effective.
Even got it setup to turn off when no one is home, don't need a battery fire.

Rize, you ever look for help with the javis and hogs?
I've been known to shoot the shite out of some hogs and javis.
Just don't put me in front of those exotics. I'll start shaking so bad I'll fall out the stand.
