I complied with my obligations under the contract. Here's additional info from my BBB Complaint, which I guess I should have included in my original post:

When I first signed a contract in June 2013 with Protection 1 (at the time, USA alarms), I was under contract for $30.95 per month, and the contract provided limits on how much it could be increased (see Section 9 of 2013 contract, attached). Sometime in 2016, after Protection 1 assumed service of my account, various services were added to my account without any notice to me and without my consent, and my monthly bill ballooned to $43.46/month (an increase of 40+%, in violation of the contract). I paid that higher amount for several months without noticing, as I was on auto-pay. When I finally noticed and contacted Protection 1 to complain, I was offered 4 months free and a lower rate of $36 - of course I said yes, I didn't feel like I had a choice. But there was a very important point that was never communicated to me in any way - apparently by agreeing to the lower rate, my contract was extended by 4 years. This extension seems totally invalid by law, as I never agreed to it, and even if I did (I didn't), I was in a position where I didn't have a choice because I was simply trying to recoup as much money as I could which had been wrongfully taken from me by the increased rate. I would have never agreed to a 4-year extension if that had been communicated to me.
UPDATE: Protection 1 finally let me out of the contract, but only after I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Previously I had been emailing and calling for weeks, and they promised to put me in touch with a manager who could address my concerns, but they never did, and eventually stopped responding to my emails. They only took action after I filed my BBB complaint

That may be an option. But I have a strong suspicion that when I request that service be transferred to my new house, they'll want to charge me a new installation fee -- even though the house is already equipped with a system, which was previously serviced by APS (a local company).

FWIW, APS tells me that any company is able to use the old equipment. Let's see if ADT agrees to it (I bet not, not without a hefty fee). The local company also tells me that when one of their customers moves, they relieve them from the contract. Should have gone local!

You no doubt have a legit gripe and they need to set you free. I would demand the contract.


Thanks for at least offering some support! As opposed to everyone else in here, who apparently love it when big national companies like ADT rip off their customers...

The contract says it auto-renews for 2 more years unless you give them written notice at least 30 days prior to the renewal date. Again, these are very anti-consumer contracts.

There's not. In fact, it specifically says I still owe them if I sell my house. It surprises me that so many people in here are defending the alarm company -- these contracts are written to strong-arm and screw over consumers!

That is my concern -- but seems like a scare tactic to me. It's not like a missed car payment where I still need to pay for the asset. All they need to do is turn off my service (even the evil cable companies will do this without requiring a contract). I paid them $564 to install the system (which they claim they still own), I paid them $36 a month for ~6 years, and now I am moving. They've made plenty money off me already!
Anybody tried going to war with their alarm company? I'm moving to a new house next week and would like to switch to a new company. My current provider on my old house, Protection 1 / ADT, is claiming that I am under contract until August of 2020, and they will charge me $576 for cancelling, even though I am moving. Usually their remedy for an early cancellation is to come re-possess the alarm system...but they can have it for all I care, I'm moving!

Anyone have tips for getting out of my contract? Thanks

My wife is required to report in January. Our newborn will be 6 months old. My wife is the primary caregiver, and our son feeds on breast milk only. Hiring a sitter for two weeks would be a huge and costly burden. Any advice for getting out? We already went online and requested to be excused, and even attached the birth certificate -- no dice, our request was denied. All help is appreciated! :bow:
