quote:We say certain words wrong b/c vowels have multiple sounds in English but one sound (more or less) in Japanese. Their characters use a syllabary based on syllables.
Wait, have I been pronouncing Ryu wrong all this time?
Any vowel can be doubled in length.
You can sometimes add a ya, yu, or yo after a consonant (like with Ryu).
The vowels in the syllables sound like:
a = ah (the first part of ah ha)
i = ii (the letter e in English)
u = ooh (like in loop or hoop)
e = eh (the vowel sound in meh)
o = oh (the letter o in English)
So ninja should sound like niinja. karaoke should sound like ka ra o ke but we tend to say carry okey. Nintendo should shound like Niin ten do-o (long o), but they "officially" changed the non-Japanese pronunciation.
It all seems simple enough, but it's hard to break the sounds you learned first. (It's also why Japanese people tens to have such a problem with learning English... they use the syllabary sounds instead of trying to figure out the mosh pit of vowel sounds that we've got.)
The exceptions are the polyglots and natural language learners. Lucky bastards.

Osaka has some Korean dishes as well as sushi rolls, if anyone in your party is less into raw fish.

re: Ideas: best or most memorable wedding gift you received
Posted by CrazyTigerFan on 4/12/26 at 9:30 pm to financetiger
Honestly, the best gifts were all of the family and friends who were able to share their time with us. 20 years later, and too many of them aren't here anymore to spend time with.
If I had to tie it to a "thing" though, my parents funded a bigger event than we could have afforded on our own, and my aunt baked us a great wedding cake.

Thinking about it now... I wonder why they're fooling with the helicopter rescue and not just recovering the capsule into the well deck after the hydrozine check is done.

LPDs have a well deck.. They can sink the deck, open the back doors, and float it on in.
ETA: By sink the deck I mean fill it with water. They can launch HCAC hovercraft and seadoos and whatnot from within the ship that way.

Better to be able to troubleshoot it and eventually solve the problem than not. It's something that will certainly be needed on future missions.
