re: Star rankings - Top 10

Michigan and Ohio State battles will be fun
Dad wants Ole Miss, kid wants UT. It's going to be interesting
If you're going by numbers, Barnett kills Garret. Most of Barnett's stats came against SEC teams while Garret's were against teams like Rice. Barnett was also hurt for the whole first half of the season but had to keep playing since we already lost Maggit for the year. Garret will be the higher draft pick tho because he's more athletic than anyone on that list
3 spots left and UT is in the top 2 with 5 top 100 players that includes 2 five stars. Plus, Latrell Williams is high on the board too. There is no room. Woods was down the list
quote:

What this basically tells me that everyone is the same outside of Bama, USC and Florida State. I've seen mods come back with a score and talk about it on 247, Rivals and Scout and the difference in a couple of points is negligible and subjective.

Average star rankings is not a good indicator because it all depends on your need. Lane Kiffin was notorious for stacking up on skill players to raise his avg star ranking, and focuses too much on quantity instead of quality. Rivals just adds the top 20 players so teams like UT won't be penalized for taking a long snapper and kicker or having to take more players to provide depth.

Yeah I was looking on my phone. The one 5* was composite rankings.

The problem with composite is it adds scout and espn rankings. I would like it much better if it was just Rivals and 247 evaluations.

Rivals lol.

You have one 5* on 247.

ETA: 61 commits in 2 years is what's absurd.

UT actually has more 5 stars on 247 than Rivals.
Kyle Phillips, Mckenzie, Preston Williams, and Alvin Kamara are 5 stars on 247

OL: Jack Jones,Zach Stewart, Chance Hall

Dylan Jackson will probably turn into an elite tackle. Bama, LSU, and Stanford are after him hard at tackle
quote:

Saulsberry is a 3rd team DT but we need all the help we need at DT

Lol, Saulsberry is the best dt we've had in the the past 3 years when healthy. He was way better than anyone on the field last year
quote:

I'd definitely like to keep one CB in this years class at least. It appears Cameron Ordway seems to be trending Ole Miss as well from UT. I'd like to be greedy and find a way to keep both.

Ordway is looking like he will be a safety now and not a corner. Its one of the main reasons along with grades why UT backed off.
quote:

We're about to land Tuttle, who is a better DT than Jones.

Dj Jones is better, but he is a one and done. UT is going to be terrible next year so I think they chose 4 years over 1 year. They couldn't realistically take both because both are expecting early pt and thats just not possible with our depth next year. It was either a one year starter now or a 3 year starter later. They chose the latter
quote:

Butch loses a recruit? No fricking way. Lolz

Its looking like UT chose Tuttle over Jones. VQ mod said people close to Jones said that the staff wasn't recruiting him that hard anymore.
quote:

How do you think this is gonna work out down the line? did the same last year too, right?...Sounds like your gonna have at least 6 HS Coaches sending future recruits elsewhere...

Every coach does it, it is what it is. He wouldn't do it to an instate school and he can always word it to give a benefit of a doubt. He told Sterling Johnson when he wanted to commit that players moved to his position so that have to make sure he is what they need now.

They told Jerome Dews linebacker is looking good so they will have to see how he can play at safety.

Kevin Mouhon visited Cincinnati and they told him its best for both parties to move on.

quote:

Aren't you worried that in a year or two, if this tactic continues, so many bridges will be burnt (HS football Coaches are a fraternity, they know each other, talk to each other constantly & have long memories) from cutting kids after they've committed that UT's name will be mud with HS Coaches across the south?

Just curious what you think the long term consequences of a strategy like this will mean UT?...

I'm pretty sure it was MUS, where Drew Richmond plays, that banned Mark Elder and Butch from the school. There is nothing words can't fix, and high school coaches think they have more control over their players recruitment than they actually do. A player will go to a school he likes. Jabo Lee's coach in South Carolina said he won't send any players to play for Butch, but we will see how long that last. Some relationships can be fixed, some can't.

If Butch wins big, its not going to matter. Saban does it all the time, but no coach would actually stop their kid from playing under Saban
quote:

What # are y'all at now? In the low 20s? Does anybody have any clue how many y'all can take?

Butch is known for being a little unethical when it comes to number crunching. He will cut a guy a week before signing day to get who he wants in. I'm predicting around 6 guys won't be on that commitment list 5 months from now.
quote:

Butch has not done anything to make me believe he is some great talent evaluator. He has done a good job of recruiting elite guys, but what has he shown that makes you confident in his ability to evaluate/coach guys up?

I watched him a lot at Cincy since I gamble on football games. He recruited and developed a lot of guys there and even CMU. Justin Wolf, Kenbrell Thompkins, Antonio Brown, Isaih Pead, and Travis Kelce are players off the top of my head that he developed and are doing well in the NFL.
Also Tubbs did well with his players last year, took UL to overtime.

quote:

Neither Mixon or Humphreys have played a down of college football yet, so not sure that is a good example. Ahmad Paige and Jacques Smith were great spring players too.

The fans are in love with Butch, but he did a very mediocre job coaching last year.

Thats true, but the same can be said about Hurd or any other freshmen looking good. I'm just saying as of right now, Mixon is looking pretty good.

Mediocre is pushing it. I'm sure he wishes he could have UF or Vandy back, but he did well enough to win 8-9 games if he had decent players. I don't know if he can get to consistent 10 win seasons, but I'm quite confident he will at least average 8 wins a year. He has wins against Strong, Marrone, Dantonio, Spurrier, Franklin, and Schiano with on par or less talent. He is at least a decent in game coach.
quote:

Yeah, we are in on wayyy too many elite players to continue taking 3* players like this imo.

Which probably means they are good players. This isn't like Dooley where we had no one else. The fact that Butch is taking these players means they are probably pretty good. 3 stars are an important part of a class too. Stars matter, but so does your only evaluation.

There isn't one team in college football that has only 4 and 5 star players as starters. Its like Butch taking Dimarya Mixon over top 150 player Conner Humphries last year. Mixon is looking like one of the best players in that class right now.
Nice grab by the Volunteers. I had a chance to see him a few weeks back and he has taken his game up another level. It was right after he picked up his Ohio State offer after he went up to Columbus. I'd been hearing he was having a pretty strong spring and he showed really well at a 7on7 tournament in Dallas in early June. I'd been hearing quite a few reports but when I saw him in Dallas at the 7on7 tournament it was pretty evident he had taken his game up a notch.

"He is currently a 5.5 3-star but I see him making a nice jump in the 3-stars in the next evaluation meetings. He was at the top of his game. He had a nice swagger to him that day. He was often assigned the other team's top guy and he won far more than he lost. He has some nice long arms and fluid hips. He was quick out of his break and while he was aggressive he was always under control. He's also a hard worker and plays for a great high school program in Dallas.

Buck takes great offense when people call him a handler, but he influences these kids big time. Dooley only got one kid out of IFM (Jalen Reeves-Maybin) and that was no coincidence.

Buck was involved with Tiny and Stone also. He said Tiny was going to go to AU the night before signing day, but changed his mind.

re: Butch Jones = Brian Kelly?

I wonder how many people know Mark Dantonio coached at Cincinatti for 3 years before Kelly.
quote:

How many is that for the Vols?

There will be attrition, probably around 5. You can already count off Jaylond Woods from the list
In 2013, you had

Eric Fisher- 2 star tightend
Luke Joeckel- 4 star ot
Lane Johnson- 2 star tightend
Jonathan Cooper- 3 star guard
Chance Warmack- 3 star guard
Dj Fluker- 5 star OT
Justin Pugh- 2 star Guard
Kyle Long- 3 star guard
Travis Frederick - 3 star center

That kind of proves my point lol, one year you had all 4 stars and the year before you had more 2 stars than 4 and 5 stars. Its a very hard position to rate
One of the few positions star rankings don't matter is offensive line. Its so hard to tell how a player will grow and develop. 3 star linemen usually dominate the NFL draft.

The UT staff was very high on this kid at tackle after he camped.
quote:

Booth was told he could sign on signing day. We were filled for EE. He decided he didn't want to stay committed if he couldn't EE. A lot of us still like Booth a lot but he chose another path.

Mouhan wasn't told to look around at ALL. Mouhan was a take but his brother's at Cincy and our LB corps is stacked this cycle. He decided he'd rather play ball with his brother.

Both guys were pretty much told to look around. The coaches hasn't visited Mouhon in like 3 months, and it was a mutual decision from both parties. Once the coaches got Jakob Johnson and solidified Gavin Bryant, Mouhon lost his spot.

Booth got his spot taken by Malone.

Butch did the same thing at Cincinatti, and in his defense, he always finds them schools like Jabo Lee. This is the kind of recruiting you have to do to win in the SEC and he needs to keep recruiting like this to be successful.
quote:

While you're not going to hear any UGA fan defend Grantham, I advise Vol fans not to grow too comfortable with Jancek and Willie. If Butch is capable of building the program up, he needs to drop those clowns in a couple of years for something better. Just not great coaches (fine for the interim, though).

Its all about the head coach. Just because they didn't work out under Richt doesn't mean they won't work out under Butch. Jancek has been with Jones for over 4 years and Jancek knows exactly what Jones wants in his defense.

A good example is Harry Heistand being a horrible fit under Dooley(all coaches were) yet being a great oline coach at Notre Dame. It all starts from the top down. Your problem was and still is Mark Richt.
quote:

Serious question. I probably wouldn't if I was a Florida fan. Outside 1998-2004, nothing about this series makes it seem like a rivalry.

Faxgate in 91?
quote:

Tennessee's best team site is the Rivals affiliate which is why some VOLS fans are hanging on.

Rivals is becoming Scout though, just a very poorly run site on the national level. Irrelevant compared to 247.

247 is way too biased. You have the evaluators running specific team sites which causes favortism since they see them a lot more and interact with the fan base. 247 has the best individual evaluators like Keith Neiubher and JC Shurburtt who only do rankings, but there is around 50 other people who also do rankings so there input is not that significant.
Rivals is used by bcs coaches by a very wide margin compared to the other sites.
quote:

Why didn't Jones do this at Cinci? I know he didn't have the level of program all time he has at Tenn now, but he should have been a good recruiter. Maybe I missed it but don't remember his classes being that good

Kelly didn't recruit well at Cincy either from a rankings perspective, and now Notre Dame is in the top 5 nearly every year.
UGA is still trying to get Cortez. It'll be the first recruit since Darick that UT has pulled from Georgia with a UGA offer.

quote:

While most thought Cortez McDowell was destined to commit last weekend if he made it to Rocky Top we heard this week from several people he's taking longer looks at both Georgia and Auburn. Both schools have come after the coveted safety prospect hard recently and so we've been told he's somewhat slowing things down and wanting to take another look at a few schools before doing anything.
A top 5 player in state next year according to Carlos Younger who works for TNVarsity. He said he only expects Drew Richmond and Rico Mcgraw to be ahead of him.
