Some pictures of my favorite jeeping trails near Ouray, CO. You need a 4xdrive with high clearance. For Corkscrew Gulch Rd, you might also need a extra pair of underwear.

Too windy to fish. Took a birding hike. 600+ snow geese (flyover), 400+ roosting specklebelly,& lots of these savannah sparrows in the dense grass by flooded rice field.

If you just want to get away for a quick trip close to home, go to Palmetto Island State Park, 6 miles south of Abbeville.

No real "hiking" to speak of. The Lagoon Trail is a straight end and out, with a small bayou running on the side of it. It's a good trail for seeing woodducks, snakes, wild hogs, and various songbirds. The other trails are really just walking paths through wooded wetlands.
No swimming. In the summer there's a "waterpark" that the young kids love.
There's a boat launch with very easy access to the Vermilion River, and a canoe launch accessing a 7 mile canoe trail through man-made lagoons. There are always small alligators in the 3 lagoons, but if they get to close to your canoe, just smack um on the snout with your paddle.
The scenery is coastal bottomland hardwood forest, and rustic.

Found out there are two subspecies on Endangered List: The Virginia Northern and the North Carolina Northern. The population of the Southern Flying Squirrel seem to be stable and/or expanding in some areas. The Southern FS has been linked to cases of epidemic typhus in humans.
I have the southern squirrel. It's either gonna eat the woodduck eggs or give me typhus. I'm with Beer&Bama on this one:

When the goldfinch come, it brings the Sharp-Shinned Hawk. That's cool to watch too.

Try switching to straight black oil sunflower seeds. It's more expensive than a multi-blend, but in the long run, I save money. Don't know if house sparrows are just looking for a quick meal, and too lazy to crack the sunflower hull, or they just prefer the millet/milo in a blend. Whatever the reason, I don't see many anymore.

Dont' know if you remember the picture, but on the scenary thread you posted a sparrow. I compared it with the sparrows in 2 birding books, and still couldn't come up with an ID. Without seeing the breast feathers made it harder. Finally, I just gave up!!

I was cleaning out a wood duck box a couple of days ago, and found a flying squirrel in it. It flew out of the box to an adjacent tree. I've lived on the natural levee of bayou Vermilion for years, never seeing a flying squirrel before. Have since learned they're an endangered species. Even though they're nocturnal, seems like I would have at least heard one. Anyone know what sound they make, if any?

I hear ya. When I see gulls flying, I almost just want to turn my head, pretend I didn't see them. They're around the crawfish ponds, esp when the bay is real rough. When I take photos, almost always need help from others to get positive ID. It's a pain.

I really wish we had a thread dedicated to birding where we could post pictures, discuss trips, ask questions, etc. I had to go through pages and pages of the scenery thread trying to relocate the picture of black-bellied whistling ducks in flight. We could call it the Outdoor Birding Spot, or similar. Don't know if there's enough interest, but I'll give it a shot. Meet me on that thread within the next day or so. I'll be posting some questions about your trip.

It doesn't look like a problem. The clover is going to die when it warms up. Hit the big weeds with a shot of roundup.
