NoDak Spud is the most common.

Back to your OP, I think you'd be better served with a compact/full size semi auto for shooting with your sons and home defense. I'd take a look at either a Glock 19 or Smith and Wesson M&P. Both are 9mm, fairly light, low recoil, more capacity, and better overall for novice/new shooters. The snappy recoil of a short-barrel revolver might turn off a new or inexperienced shooter. Just my thoughts.

It was recommended that I start a thread introducing myself. I jokingly responded with "John T. Chance needs no introduction." It was not my intent to cause trouble, as I figured many of the members that frequent the Outdoor Board would know this character portrayed by John Wayne.

tl;dr: I'm a new member but have been lurking for several years, and I look forward to contributing (hopefully) helpful information.

I have all of the 4 different Glock 9mm models. I enjoy shooting the 19 and 26 just as much as the 17 and 34. I also carry the 26 almost everyday and have never had a problem with comfort. Couple that with the fact that I have never had a FTF with a Glock and the answer seems obvious.

OP, your best bet is to try out different guns and pick the one YOU like. You should be able to find a nice Glock or M&P (both having good records for reliability) in your price range.

Vortex Optics makes some decent, reasonably priced stuff.
Tannerite.
Dragons Breath shells.
Poison the water they swim in.

One of those should work.
