I would try to plant in masses so it looks more natural. Nature usually has multiple trees in close proximity. It helps with wind shear and adds visual interest.
Around a pond you would try 3 cypress in a triangle shape or a cluster of oaks(not live oak) in an open space …odd numbers usually are more appealing.
Also if near house, deciduous trees along the east and west.
Trees on west side will shade home in summer, but allow sun to warm it in winter when trees are barren. I’ve seen big changes in my home’s temperature now that my trees have gotten large enough to cover the west side in summer! Have fun with it, pick multiple varieties. Shumard oaks have wonderful fall foliage. Try to pick native species. Red swamp maple is another great option.
Willow oaks grow well here with a more columnar growth habit if want closer to the home.
Live oak, maple, and cypress are great for hurricane territory…native and have the ability to make it through storms !

I built a pvc frame also initially but realized that every cold event for us brings fierce north winds. The pvc doesn’t stand a chance..I ended up getting some electric Emt conduit and used these Corner and built a strong and sturdy frame.
Top it with some quality greenhouse plastic and no longer worry with wind.
Also use these clips to hold it to the frame

Harvested a late season guava !
Man that thing was good, completely different flavor than what I had a few months ago. It was much smaller but I’ll take small for that flavor ! Any specific Amendments that guavas like to improve fruit flavor ?
Also had a tragedy with my super Hass avocado. A few months ago it got caught on fire by a pine straw bale and a weed torch (that’s what you get trying to not use herbicides)
It took half the tree down, it had started to recover and we got the last cold snap, I had my heater setup in the greenhouse over it, and I just wasn’t thinking. The heater was aimed up towards the tree, and not just at the ground. So basically cooked the tree for 2 days straight. I cut it back, but the branches look terrible, leathery and black..I’ve seen this before.
Not very hopeful.
Saxon Becnel has some super Hass that will be getting put out in 6 weeks, plan to get one for a replacement in the event that this one dies off.
I’ve considered topping it completely and hoping it rebounds come spring.
Good news is my Reed is about to bloom and I’ve learned a lot having 2 to care for.
That’s gardening!

Yea man I’m in Geismar! Good growth over the last year. These are in Gary’s top pot mix. It’s definitely the real deal.
You think still to small to
Hold fruit ? Or is Pickering okay to maybe hold 1-2 just so my kids believe they’re actually mango trees lol.
I have a ruby guava that I need to repot into a better mix, but gonna wait until closer to spring, and prune it back

My Pickering has started to
Flush as well. It’s still a small tree so wasn’t planning to let it hold any fruit.
Will it abort on its own, or should I remove anything that stays ?
At what size is it safe to allow them to hold fruit.
My Dwarf Hawaiian flushed a few weeks ago, but nothing set assuming bc it was left outside like that in the 40s.
I’ve been rolling them inside anytime forecast shows <40
Maybe that’s where I went wrong

My satsuma didn’t bloom last spring but decided to bloom and set fruit about 6 weeks ago …loaded with marble size fruit lol.
Guess I just let it be? Or will this affect the next bloom?
Also my dwarf Hawaiian tried to push panicles and flower then stopped. The Pickering is still hanging out unbothered.
Don’t want either to set fruit this year anyways.

Cleggs sells the pro mix in bags, not the compressed bales though. Not sure if I’ve ran across the bales anyplace local.
I have 2 in ground. I posted a few times in the tropical thread about them.
Super Hass and a Reed.
SH been in ground 18 months
Reed about a year.
They’re both doing very well. I have them planted on mounds..needed for drainage.
I know my drainage is good bc I also have lavender growing at the base as a living mulch, which is thriving, a notoriously hard thing to grow in Louisiana.
I harvested fruit from the SH last year, it did not flower bc of snow storm this year, covered with heat, it completely defoliated but was alive. It flushed new growth, and I’m hopeful for next year.
The reed did much better through the cold 9’ at my house with same care. It flowered and put on fruit, but ultimately aborted it. I think next year it will hold.

You will need to use something that sends signal over long range ..aimed dishes. UniFi has a great setup on much of that. You get what you pay for in that realm. You will need power at the locations to run the POE. You may be able to reach out to them directly for more guidance on building a system. Another option is the unifi reddit..
Good news. Have you gotten any fruit from it yet?
I have one planted as well. Was bare root a year ago, I let it get some decent scaffolds this year. Always hard pruning young trees but hope it sets me up for success. I have about 10 fruit (stone, apple, pear, citrus ) in a single area plan is to keep them all smallish, backyard orchard culture style.

I got 2 also. I have a Sango currently, on the east side of my house. It does well. I’m thinking of putting this non my pool
Yard, which gets sun from 11-dark.
Any thoughts on if it can take it without significant leaf curl? Or should this variety still not be full afternoon sun?

Yea did you not use the Scott’s and also not apply anything else ? If so that’s on you.
Most in here recommend separate applications of herbicide, fertilizer and pre emergent.
Now if you’re strapped for time then convenience wins and you may need to use combo products, but usually there not as effective as single source applications.

What rate are you doing now and in march per 1000ft?
Do you spray with 2 gal or 1 per 1000?

I just had my first guava. Aromatic, was a light green/yellow. I didn’t pick it was under the tree so guessing it fell off? Assuming it was ripe. Texture was interesting, and flavor not bad but wasn’t overly sweet. First time so nothing to compare it to..have more coming, may wait longer to eat next time ?
Do you counter ripen to that darker yellow?

I have a row of little lime in full sun that do great, but have never turned pink. Just brown out in the fall

Real talk
Recognition herbicide
Expensive but works fantastic on VBW in st Aug. - no chlorosis to grass and more tolerance of temperature
Will be purple and dead in 10
Days.
0.045oz /gal spot spray

Day temps are high but still fine to put out your fall plants, just have to water a bit more often.
I planted my fall crop Sept 2 and had started seeds Aug 1…they’re doing great
I am watering daily right now, but can probably back of some now that they’re established.

Thanks for the input on temps.
Funny how different my DH and Pickering are flushing growth.
Pickering is much more prolific, large leaves and pushes about every 4-6 weeks!
If I wanted to prune my guava back how should I do that for size control? It has a nice main leader about 5ft tall from the crown, and several lateral branches established.
Head the laterals back hard? Cut the main leader back?
