I don't see the issue, if your spatial awareness tells you the ball is 3 foot, and on the opposite side, from the baby in your arms and its actually headed right at the baby you probably shouldn't be holding children in the first place. No doubt there's a line where its too close and you're a bad parent, but that Dad is far from it.
