I just received American Gods in the mail. Going to start it for the first time later on tonight.

I'm almost through Good Omens and am finding it difficult as well. Love Gaiman and was hoping to enjoy this to bridge into Pratchett. Alas.

I've read several of his books. My favorite by far was Coraline. American Gods had too many characters for me to care about, and the other two or three books just didn't pull me in.

Dude is overrated. It took me a couple of tries to get through AG. Did not like it at all.

You not liking a book doesn't mean he's overrated.

Didn't feel like it took much to get into The Ocean at the End of the Lane...it was a good one.

If you want to kind of ease your way into his work, check out Good Omens, co-authored by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. One of the GOAT dark comedies.
One of my all time favorites. Up there with a Confederacy of Dunces

The Sandman series is absolutely beautiful and powerful writing.
His newest book, Norse Mythology, is also a really good and fun read. The Norse mythos contain some wild arse tales.

When I first read Good Omens, I thought it was a Neil Gaiman book.. after reading Pratchett, it reads like a Terry Pratchett book. If you like the humor in Good Omens, then you may like Terry Pratchett.
IF you start reading Terry Pratchett, don't start at the beginning of the discworld series, start a few books in.
If you like egyptian stuff, "pyramids" is a good one-shot start, if not, then go "guards guards" -- which makes fun of how beauracracies work.

Yeah, Good Omens is mainly a scaled down version of a Pratchett novel with some Gaiman type characters and vibes thrown in. It's a very good novel, but I wouldn't put it up there with either authors best works. It can be a decent bridge to both authors though, but moreso for Pratchett.

Finished American Gods a few days ago and it's an incredible novel. It ain't exactly in my wheel house but appreciate this board for recommending it. Was blown away. My first Gaiman and it didn't disappoint.

And most said you gotta earn the first 100 pages. I didn't feel that way though. Thought it perfect start to finish.
