You have to get through the creation stuff at the beginning, and hit the elves before it starts to seem more like Lord of the Rings.

The Silmarillion is like nothing else in fiction. It more closely resembles Hamilton's Mythology than anything else. My biggest piece of advice to anyone who wants to read it after enjoying LotR is to not expect it to be anything like LotR. Although it does tell a tale, it does not have one central plot, and the focus can jump hundreds of years at a time. However, once you get used to it, it is wondrously beautiful, and as many have mentioned, will deepen your enjoyment of both LotR and The Hobbit.

I've always thought the silmarillion lended itself to a tv series because of the several stories that have overlapping characters at times.
It's my favorite of Tolkien's works. Now have them all in kindle format so I easily do my annual re-read.

Ever since the movies people you would hear people say "I wish they would do something on The Silmarillion." I was never in that boat. It would be virtually impossible to do it justice. Especially if you're going to try and tell the stories of creation. That just cant be done.
The new Amazon show is going to take place in the 2nd age and I have a feeling it is going to be an absolute disaster. I'm not going to hate on it before I watch it, but i'm not getting my hopes up.
Too much needs to be filled in the gaps to make a TV series that stays true to the novel.

I've only read LoTR once, and no other Tolkien works. Are there any specific books written about the 2nd Age? Or is it only covered in the appendixes of LoTR and The Silmarillion?

The 2nd age is covered in the Silmarillion and appendixes. I dont know how others would describe it but the 2nd age reads more like a history book to me. It spanned over 3,000 years and its not a large portion of the book so you get almost short stories that jump around in years, not a very continuous story. Here's a brief description...
quote:
The Second Age lasted for 3,441 years, and ended with the defeat of Sauron and his army by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, a century after the Downfall of Númenor.
This age was characterized by the rise (eventually with increased insolence) of Númenor, and Sauron in Middle-earth, the emergence of the Ringwraiths, and the early wars of the Rings between Sauron and the Elves. The One Ring came into existence during this period.[1]
In the show, Galadriel and Elrond both seem to be pretty young. But by the 2nd age Galadriel would have been thousands of years old and Elrond well over 1,000 (i'd need to look it up because my memory is really bad despite reading it multiple times). So a 2nd age "coming of age" story for those two doesn't make much sense.

The more I am reading and seeing trailers for this show, the more I know its going to suck arse.
Elrond and Elros were born FA 532. The War of Wrath started FA 545 and ended FA 587.
Galadriel is born in 1362 in the year of the Trees.
However, "The Years of the Trees were known to be comprised of several Ages and lasted in total around 1500 Valian Years or 14,373 solar years."
Galadriel is ancient by the time of the events of the FA much less the SA. There are certainly NO accounts of her wielding a sword as a warrior.
