I just finished #3 and I didn’t care for it at all. The trains and shite was so confusing and I basically glazed over a bunch of that
Hoping #4 is better

The iron tangle is a bit confusing. It took me a couple of reads to finally get it. The gate of the feral gods can be confusing as well.

Easily the weakest book in the series, imo. I still enjoyed it overall, but I didn't care for the train system as a level.

I'm a third of the way through book 3. I'm enjoying it so far.
I just finished the chapter where they're on the Dismemberment Limited; the train with the War Mage and the Fleshers.

I have maybe 100-150 pages left in #3 and it's my least favorite for sure. I'm still enjoying it but I agree the train system is a bit much. At first I'd go back and read a paragraph or two to try and get it in my head but now I'm just reading it and not worrying about trying to understand it/picture it in my head. It is what it is I guess.
It's much more comical that pretty much any other series I've read but even the comedy in #3 seems to be less.
Though the Hekla stuff was pretty bad arse and was a great read. Should have been asleep but couldn't put it down.
On goodreads #3 has the lowest star rating of any of the books.

I bought the first book last year because of this thread. But I held on to it until the end of the year when I finally decided to give it a try
And thanks, now, I have to buy all of them
Finished 2025 with Doomsday Scenario and Anarchist Cookbook is arriving tomorrow and will start it after I finish my current read
At this pace, I'll probably finish #7 right before #8 comes out

You should listen to the audible versions afterwards. They're freaking great.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through book 3. I thought I understood the train system, but now I have no idea what's going on.
Why are their multiples of the same station #. I probably missed something earlier in the book that explained it.
I was hoping from more from the Anarchist Cookbook, since that's the title of the book. But so far its just Carl occasionally saying "I looked it up in the book and there wasn't much about it..." or something similar to that.

I'm really early in book 3.
I'm going to accept the author's note at the beginning of my copy that says
And there is a map at the end, but I haven't looked at it yet.
I will try to take his advice and just ignore the stations

Finished book 3 last night.
I didn't hate it.
I'm really curious where he's going with the epilogue of the Mobs building a death maze.

Finished book 4 a few days ago. Enjoyed in more than 3 for sure. The epilogue had a pretty good shocker I did not see coming.
The bonus chapter from the physical book in book 4 was the best one yet.
If anyone is just doing audible I'd try to google and get the bonus chapters that are only in the physical copy. The uprising story/maze building is pretty good.

I'm deciding between starting book 4 now, or reading one of the books I got for Christmas.
I think I'll read the Jean Lafitte book I got next, then read the Carl book 4, just so I don't get burned out on the Dungeon universe.

Yea I'm reading a book or two in between 4 and 5 of DCC for the same reason.

2 chapters and the epilogue to go on book 3
I get the physical copy so I have the "backstage at the pineapple cabaret"
I also decided to try out the audiobooks since I have some long drives ahead
Usually have trouble paying attention, but it is great voice acting
Right now I'm switching between DCC and Reacher
Getting my page count up quick this year I guess

I just started book 7 and pre ordered book 8. This series is like crack. I can’t it down.

Who would y'all cast as Carl?
The audiobook Carl sounds like Patrick Warburton and his son sounds just like him and is not too far past 30
Seth McFarland does well with the nerdy stuff, so hoping he won't try to force a big name that doesn't really fit
Finished #3. Kept my word and switched back to Reacher, but #4 is on the shelf and next in line
On track to be caught up just as #8 comes out

I have a hard time picturing anyone in the right age range. Patrick Warburton in his 30s obviously would have been perfect.
Alan Ritchson is the only guy who comes to mind with the look and combo of action and comedy chops (if he slimmed down from his bulk in Reacher a bit). But he's about 10 years too old (though Carl honestly reads to me as a guy closer to mid thirties than his late 20s age in the book).

I think he could fit the bill. Supposedly 6'5" too.
Ritchson would be good and to be honest, if they are within 15 years, they can make the actors look late 20s, based on how many 25+ yo they cast as highschool kids
I just don't want someone like Glen Powell (don't dislike him, just don't like him for Carl) or even Seth McFarland trying to take it himself. He'd be a good Mordecai if Danny Devito refused

This is true, and they could always age up Carl in the show into his early/mid thirties, it wouldn't change the character much. And someone like Ritchson could pull off mid 30s.
And agreed on Powell, not big enough to play Carl, and a bit too smooth and pretty boy to play Carl. Carl needs to be a bigger, rough and tumble kind of guy.
