If you like the civil war, Bernard Cornwell’ Starbucks Chronicles is great.
The only problem is he abandoned it when his Sharp books became a tv series and some of his other series really took off.
Spoiler below
If he ever picks it up again, me theory is that he will have Nate kill Stonewall and switch sides.

Bernard Cornwell’s books
I wish the TV show Last Kingdom would've followed the books more closely.

City of Thieves, by David Benioff.
I rarely read fiction and thoroughly enjoyed this one
Not a bad book and a relatively quick read. My only problem with it was that I knew how it would end the second the 2 main characters met each other.

Lonesome Dove was absolutely incredible.
I read John Jake's North and South sagas as a teenager and liked it but I picked it back up as an adult and thought it was not very good writing. And it was very soap opera-ish.

The Greenlanders by Jane Smiley, set in 14th century Greenland. Vikings have settled in Greenland for a while when the story picks up, cling to some old traditions while being Christian and more pastoral vs. raiders. One impressive feature is how fleshed put the characters are, kind of long but rewarding read. Learned a lot about a place/culture I knew little about.
The Road to Jerusalem, by Jan Guillou, also Scandinavian setting, boy raised in a monastery eventually heads off on Crusades. First of a trilogy

Gates of Fire. Recounts the Battle of Thermopylae and the 300 Spartans.

The Accursed Kings series by Maurice Druon. Top notch historical fiction.
