I think Gorst was my favorite in the Heroes then again in The Age of Madness. His inner dialogue in Heroes had me laughing quite a few times. I wonder how he would have done in combat if he'd come across the Bloody Nine or had to fight some other northman (such as Shivers) in the circle.

I just took a break from the Suneater to listen to the Bobiverse. I really enjoyed it. Entertaining and lighthearted. Good nerd humor throughout.

Just started Ashes of Man this morning. Back to the darkness.

I’ve been switching between Bobiverse and the Age of Madness trilogy. I would have finished Bobiverse but I ran out of audible credits and Ray Porter is too good to read them myself. I alternate reading and listening for First Law and Gorst is one of the best narrated characters. Perfectly captures his voice.

FIRST LAW SPOILERS:

Right after I typed that I read the chapter where Whirrun gets killed
AWESOME fight sequence, though. I was kinda hoping he’d give the father of swords to Gorst

Just started Red Country

“She tossed her shoulder at Lamb. The big old Northman fussed with the notch out of his ear. ‘That’s because you’re some kind of a bloody coward, better to do it than live with the fear of it. Isn’t that what you’re always telling me.’”

I just finished the Age of Madness. It was tough switching to the next generation and coming to the realization that certain characters were not returning. The ones that did were done so well. Especially Gorst and Tunny. Isern-i-Phail quickly became my favorite new character in this trilogy. So many hilarious comments from her constant advice to Rikke.

Any word on his plans for a new trilogy? Luckily I have Wind and Truth to fill the void next week but even after 9 books and the short stories I’m ready for more.

Also, frick Bayaz.

Finished Unsouled the first Cradle book the other day. Liked there is a “bigger” storyline going on that the generic one. Definitely still interested will prob continue after Wind and Truth ruins my life next week.

Yea the characters in The First Law were so strong you just wanted more. Probably was best to move on from them though. Glokta though

I love TFL so much I actually put off reading the others, even the stand alones for a while just because I didn't want to be disappointed but man they are were just really good. I plan on re-reading Age of Madness before too long because I did part of it in audio book and I just don't enjoy or retain an audio book nearly as much, even though Steven Pacey is a top tier narrator. I agree, Isern and Rikke were great.

His next book is called The Devils. Not sure what the series name is but it's not in The First Law universe. Also has elves in it which is kind of cool Sound pretty interesting...

quote:

Brother Diaz has been summoned to the Sacred City, where he is certain a commendation and grand holy assignment awaits him. But his new flock is made up of unrepentant murderers, practitioners of ghastly magic, and outright monsters, and the mission he is tasked with will require bloody measures from them all in order to achieve its righteous ends.

Elves lurk at our borders and hunger for our flesh, while greedy princes care for nothing but their own ambitions and comfort. With a hellish journey before him, it's a good thing Brother Diaz has the devils on his side.

Advanced reader copies are out and the reviews that I've seen have been really good. Releases May of 25.

Seriously, he can suck an arse. Very few characters have ever gotten under my skin like Bayaz.

Just finished Red Country. Was traveling all November so it took longer than it should have. Enjoyed it, but would probably rank it last as far as the standalones go. It’s obvious it’s heavily influenced by westerns and had a “are we any better than the ones we consider savages/settlers and Indians” theme. Loved getting Logan back and Temple was a great character. The battle with the dragon people was a pretty big letdown, but I get they were trying to say sometimes those we consider savage aren’t so savage. The chapters in between Temple’s desertion from Cosca to when they finally arrive in Crease dragged. However, a perfect end for Cosca. I’ve hated him for awhile now.

The Heroes
Best Served Cold
Red Country

Would be my ranking. With The Heroes far and away my favorite of the whole series so far. I love the Northman and the whole notion of making a whole book out of a 3 day battle was just awesome.

Jumping straight into the Age Of Madness trilogy. From what I’ve heard it’s the best part of the series

Finally got around to reading Armor. It was a bit of a slog through some parts but damn, it ended strong.

AOM is vintage Abercrombie.. I would really need a reread of the entire series to rate my best trilogy. the Devils can't wait!

He is releasing a new book in May called the Devils. Think it's going to be a trilogy. It'll be the first series not set in the First Law universe. The short description that's on good reads sounds really good. First time he's got elves in his story as well...

Edit: Also, saw you're reading Assassin's Apprentice, let us know how that is. I bought that probably a year ago and never started it.

I've seen it recommended here a few times. I'm about 5 chapters in so far, it's slow right now but interesting. It's more setup now than story so we shall see.

It's a solid series, not in the same realm as Abercrombie, but solid.

Abercrombie has written an entire trilogy that wasn't set in the first law world my man. It was pretty solid too. Not as good as the first law stuff, but very good.
