John Ringo has some good stuff. You need to be on his Substack subscription for his work since 2023 (worth it IMO). Best 2 series I’d say are

Black Tide series, first book is Under a Graveyard Sky. Serious Zombie Apocalypse universe

Troy Rising, first book is Live Free or Die. Aliens say hello and aren’t nice. The way to beat them is interesting to say the least.

Safehold series by Dave Weber
Off Armageddon Reef is the first. Earth is destroyed, humanity is just about wiped out and in hiding.

Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London books are pretty solid urban fantasy if you haven't tried them.

I knew there was one I was missing. He's written a lot on that series and at one point I think I got a bit lost and missed a book or two. Once I get done with my current series I may try to go back over that one and see where I got lost.

Neal Stephenson- Snow Crash

And The Diamond Age, Anathem, and Seven Eves. Non sci-fi - Cryptonomicon is one of the greats.

Roger Zelazny- Lord of Light (Amber Chronicles too)

Great stuff. Lots of books that are tangentially sci-fi.

Sure, but really comedy, some of the best ever.

I'm very old school on this so you won't go far wrong with Heinlein (dated as he is). The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress in particular.

Hard to go wrong with Ursula LeGuin, she might have been the best writer of the old sci-fi bunch (her or Zelazny). The Left Hand of Darkness is really well done. The Lathe of Heaven, the Earthsea series, the Hainish cycle... it took me a long time to recognize how good she really was.

Halfway through Elantris by Sanderson and it's not really doing it for me like the rest of his stuff. Was going to try and finish before I start The Devils but don't think I'm going to make it.

My library has the audio versions of these, just downloaded Off Armageddon Reef. The description has me really interested.

It’s his first book and woof you can tell. The Emperors Soul and Elantris novella is much better. You’re doing whole cosmere so there’s some stuff in there you’ll need to notice.

I just finished reading Book 18 of Expeditionary Force series. This one is called Gateway.

It was very good. I hope they turn this into a TV series or movie series, and I hope they let RC Bray do the voice of Skippy in the show or movie.

Author is Craig Alanson. Great series.

Put a pause on Elantris since I started The Devils but was close to finishing. But yea, definitely my least favorite Sanderson that I've read so far. The first one that I for sure wouldn't re-read. Probably would be a DNF if it wasn't for it being in the Cosmere. Not bad, but just very corny compared to the rest of his stuff.

Have any of you read the Legends of the First Empire - Age of Myth books? I did the audiobooks for Riryia back in the day.

Plan on doing that after the GreatCloaks

I just finished Dark Age (Red Rising #5) and it may be one of my favorite books I've read in a while. I'm interested to see what happens in Light Bringer, but I may take a quick break and read something else before it so I can let it all soak in.

I finished Lightbringer last week and it was pretty good. I read the second trilogy back to back. It got pretty exhausting, like how much bad sh*t can keep happening to the same guy?

Initially I dreaded the back half trilogy because all the new POVs but I don’t remember one that I just dreaded reading (looking at you dorne chapters and Brienne first read though of Feast for Crows).

Yeah, I haven't read the third book of the second trilogy yet (planning on just waiting till he finishes the series to read anymore). But while I think they are very solid books, I kinda feel the same way about the first two of the second trilogy.

I know what you're talking about. That's one reason I like taking breaks between books in a series. I'm guessing it'll all work out in the end lol.

I'm currently on book two (Spec Ops) of the Expeditionary Force series. It's not what I expected but I'm enjoying the hell out of it.
