I read it when I was much younger and in school, but I re-read it a year or two ago.
I thought it held up well and deserves praise as a great American novel
Agree or disagree?

It encapsulates an entire decade of American life in a novella (well, almost) length book you can read in 1 sitting (or 2, easily). It has very dense character development when you consider how few pages/words are devoted to it. It has some of the best imagery of any modern novel and universal concepts that almost anyone who was young and ambitious can identify with.
Now, is it as good as Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn? I'm not sure. Are those the 3 I put up against anything written by anyone (American or otherwise)? Yes.
