As long as this is Orgerons hire and not Woodward’s I’m fine with it. Woodward needs to stay out of hires and let Orgeron sink or swim.

You people, I swear. This place really attracts dumbasses.
Seriously, go see a movie. Build a birdhouse. Have sex with a girl. You’re way too emotionally invested in this.

Oh that’s not a conspiracy theory at all. That’s common sense thinking.
If Scott Woodward is worth even one dollar of his salary you know he’s sitting in his office playing the long game and weighing these hires in the balance of the worst case scenario coming to pass next December.
timlan2057: Agree, I am not into the conspiracy part of this, I just see it for what it is, Woody is not going to have himself hand tied like Alleva was when he fired Les and LSU owed LES some huge amount of Money.
So I agree, based on what I am seeing, there is some contingency planning going on. O has a chance to get it right next year, but it is going to have to work within some constraint. So if you have a budget constraint for DC contracts, then one way to work it is find a qualified coach who is being paid by someone else. The only other option is to find a young Joe Brady version for a DC.
From a risk perspective, if you are O, what is the > risk?

He just turned 51 and is coming off of a 7 year tenure as an SEC Head Coach.
Bo Pelini just turned 53 and is coming off an 11 year stretch as head coach of Nebraska and Youngstown. You really don’t see the apprehension here? Really?

His defenses were shite at vandy. Spare me the fricking talent gap. James Franklin was an OC and was able to crush it there.
Mason had ok defenses 8 years ago but hasn't called since then.
Raymond is 51. I'd much rather give him the position then Mason.
I'd take Mason as a position coach solely.
I know it’s not popular but you do know that the jimmies and Joe’s matter greatly! Vandy doesn’t exactly attract the 5 star and 4 star guys we have at Lsu!
Not saying he would be my top choice but I am
Sure he is more than capable of calling A defense still

Want someone New. Mason ain't it.

Hey, this is almost uncharted territory.
Here we are making two major coordinator hires plus enough staff hires that it is almost like hiring a HC and a whole new staff. And then there’s a decent possibility that a year from now you DO have to hire a head coach and a whole new staff.
Don’t forget as far as staff turnover, Mickey Joseph could very well be swept away in the Title IX housecleaning and O has to hire a receivers coach too.
But yes, I have to believe that somewhere in here Woodward has told O, “Okay, here’s what you can do. Here is the financial constraints on these hires.”
I do not believe O has carte blanche here. Who knows? That may be to his advantage in a borderline season if he can tell Woodward—“you didn’t let me hire who I wanted.”
But frankly, I believe Woodward is chomping at the bit to make his signature hire for head football coach at LSU.

Mason was a legit DC at Vandy! I don't care about skin color I care about winning. Can you imagine what he could do with with the top 5 talent we have at LSU?

This is honestly as "LSU" as it gets. Does anyone with input actually examine resumes, statistics, performance on the field, conduct multiple interviews? Hell no. It's just, "Yeah I heard about that baw. He was good once. Let's throw millions at him and call it a day."

All that said, this hire would be a ground rule double (runner has to go back to third). We need a home run hire.
This is a home run hire. Here’s a man who’s been in the SEC for years. Seen every offense imaginable combining his PAC 12 days (some say the Home of the Spread) and now has one job and that is to focus solely on defense. Not an entire program. And frick it I’ll say it, a guy who’s gonna relate to these young guys and motivate them to reach their potential and keep their head on straight.
But the smartasses in here just see Vandy coach and move along

You would've thought Pelini had seen his share of modern offenses traveling through Lincoln and Youngstown, too.
frick that. After getting burned so badly by a Pelini-type hire (plus Linehan, et al), you have to go in the opposite direction (especially after the success of Brady). I'm in the camp with those wanting someone who served as exclusively as a DC over the past few years.

Based on what? Being one of the worst defenses in the nation the past two years? Stop using vandy as an excuse. He was awful and shouldn't be trusted by O to save his job this fall.
You don't get to be historically bad and fall into a DC position at a top 10 program.

Yes let's just point to Stanford who is in a horrible conference with horrible teams. Only had to play a max 2 games against good offenses.
Stanford scoring defense was 10th in 2013
Scoring offenses they played
#3 Oregon
#10 Arizona St
#18 Washington
#20 UCLA
#27 Oregon St
Now these are some notable scoring defenses ahead of that Stanford team, and the scoring offenses they played against
#1 Scoring Defense FSU
Scoring offenses they played
#8 Clemson
#12 Auburn
#33 Miami
#75 Nevada
#79 Pitt
#4 Scoring Defense Bama
Scoring offenses they played
#5 TAMU
#12 Auburn
#22 Colorado St
#23 LSU
#40 Oklahoma
#6 Scoring Defense Wisconsin
Scoring offenses they played:
#3 Ohio St
#10 Arizona St
#16 Indiana
#55 BYU
#60 Illinois
