Since 2015, the big name programs with money have hired 3 guys with P5 HC experience, 3 guys with G5 HC experience only, and 4 guys with no HC experience at all.
School (years of P5 HC experience when hired)
Florida (9 years)
Texas A&M (8 years)
Texas (7 years)
Auburn (0)*
Oregon (0)**
Florida St. (0)***
Georgia (0)
Ohio St. (0)
Oklahoma (0)
USC (0)
* 8 years as HC at G5 school
** 6 years as HC at G5 school
*** 4 years as HC at G5 school
Am I missing anyone?
Interesting to note that hires with P5 HC experience have underwhelmed, as a group.

Depends on what you consider big name programs with money. You consider Texas A&M a top program, so I imagine you are pretty lenient on which schools apply. I'd add:
- Heupel at Tennessee
- Beamer at SC
- Tucker at Michigan State in 2019. Previous experience at P5 Colorado.
- Jim Harbaugh at Michigan 2015. Previous experience in NFL and P5 Stanford.
- Paul Chryst at Wisconsin 2015. Previous experience at P5 Pitt
- Jimmy Lake at Washington 2020
- Scott Frost at Nebraska 2018

So P5 coordinators have, on average, more success than P5 HC's moving over and G5 moving up have the least success.
Another interpretation is that programs that had success previously with their coaches were able to promote P5 coordinators and were able to maintain that success.
Of the last group (UGA, USC, OU, and tOSU) 3 of those 4 were doing at least well and continued. The outlier, USC, struggled and continued to struggle.
That's latter is the real tale of the tape. Doing well prior to allowed those coaches to come in and at least maintain if not improve. They didn't have to pull the program up by the bootstraps.
Guess what- we're not doing well. We have culture, coaching, and performance problems. So we have to find a coach that elevated a program, not maintained success (or maintained failure). We have to find someone who changed a dynamic.
Saban did that at LSU and Alabama. He's not an option.
Freeze did it at Ole Miss and Liberty (with some issues).
Campbell did it a ISU
Petersen did it a Wash
Maybe Chadwell belongs here?
MacIntyre almost did it at CO
