non competes are very hard to enforce in most cases. fwiw

This. Courts tend to strike down these provisions as unenforceable since they discourage commerce and prevent people from being employed. In other words, I don't think this would prevent him from coaching anywhere else in the SEC, should he ever decide to do so.

i think an 18 million dollar buyout helps to keep potential suitors away.

The point of the contract was for Petrino to reaffirm his commitment to be in Fayetteville.

No team knows where their coach might be next year.

We've got an 18 million dollar buy out clause that says he'll be here, a minimum, two years.

He intends to stay, and our contract with our coach is as good as it gets in CFB.

i think the non-compete would likely be enforceable in the West, though not across the whole SEC

Regardless, as mentioned, it's mostly symbolic. Petrino is showing his commitment to the U of A. By signing, he says he doesn't even want another job in the SEC No more "job hopper" dirty recruiting against him.

He may be able to get out, but not without being a contract breaker and adding another black eye to his resume.

has it ever occurred that it works both ways? what if you guys aren't happy with him in two to three years? you going to be happy having to pay him all that money?

these long term deals are stupid for the schools. see notre dame and charlie weis.

very few coaches are having long term success. just look at urban and brown this year.

Muschamp to fla and this non-compete means that Texas will go after Petrino when Mack Brown is done.
