In the article cited, UT admitted they weren't doing very well in the SWC. This was right after SMU had gotten the death penalty, keep that in mind.

What I take from this is that even though UT's program was sucking at the time, they were still the same arrogant asses they are today.

Texas A&M has even less and it's amazing that some think they have a great history. They're 2-12 in bowl games over the last 20 years.

sounds like someon has a serious case of Texas hate.

UT ranks 7th on the cfbdatawarehouse rankings. They have 4 NC,s 2 Heisman winners, several Heisman finalists, plenty of college and NFL HOFer's, I think they are 2nd or 3rd all time in wins, have won plenty of bowl games, they are, like it or not, one of the all time great programs, to say otherwise is ridiulous.

As for A&M, they have a good program, they rank 20th all time, not elite, but very good. As to their recent bowl record, From 1970-1994 LSU was 3-10 in bowls.

Yeah, I'm really curious as to how Texass came up with those 4 schools and why they left the others out.

I wouldn't dispute what others have said, I certainly don't know, but Rice and TCU were pretty much jokes. They didn't complete well in the SWC or the B8, So they were pretty much not legit candidates. I don't know when all the death penalty stuff smacked SMU in the chops, but their reputation was shite for a long time in that era. Nobody was going to throw their weight behind SMU. The big market answer is probably right on about Houston. IMO, FWIW, YMMV, PIIHB

It was probably a combination of a few factors; competition in Texas, SMU's death penalty, and more money for UT.

From 1979 to 1986, SMU had the best team that a slush fund could buy. They didn't field a team in 1987 or 1988. They made a bowl game last season for the first time since their program was resurrected in 1989.

Community colleges? lay off the bong man, UH is the third largest Public School in Texas. And when did Baylor a "small private school" care enough about football to be invited? Fact was UH TCU and SMU were dominating Texas during that time and they didn't want to play them anymore. Maybe thats why they haven't played any of the three since?

And that shows that UH isnt a commuter college how? No one lives on or near campus and until very recently their academics were so bad it would make *insert random crappy school* blush.

As for your argument that my statement about private schools is crap because of Baylor... It has been well documented that Baylor was only allowed into the big 12 because of politics.

Yea the Pony Express at SMU
you have no idea how empty Cowboys Stadium was except when SMU played Texas teams with fan bases.

I was there in 1981 with Dickerson/James.
