LSU Golf Course--condition UPDATE 12/17

I want to take advantage of the tropical Louisiana winter tomorrow and get a round in whilst taking a leisurely walk.
Last I read here, the place seemed to be improving.
I'm not looking for Augusta National quality--just need to be confident that I can find my ball in the fairway and putt on a green that doesn't have more sand than a bunker.
What say you? Should I give it a shot or just trudge on over to Webb instead...

I want to play at either Webb or LSU tomorrow...I don't have time to drive a 1-hour round trip. Not looking for quality golf--just looking to walk 18 and get a little exercise.
So I'm just trying to ascertain if LSU is so crappy that it isn't even worth the effort, compared to Webb.
I'd love to go to LSU--it has been a while. But if it is in shitastic shape, then I'll just go to Webb.

Calling it a goat ranch is offensive to goats

I normally play LSU 2 or 3 times a month. Yes it is better than it has been in the last year where all we did was 2 putt because the greens were just sand, no grass. I think 17 and 18 were the only greens were you could putt out. They put down alot of sod on most of the greens which made it better but bumpy over the sod. We would go just about every other Sunday morning and for $15 with a cart it was not a bad deal since you cannot get on anywhere else. Not a lot of traffic unless you get behind 5 students playing out of 2 bags that don't know the meaning of letting someone play thru.

After your next round, ask the superintendent or manager when they plan on making any progress towards the current conditions and report back.

Webb is on a completely different level than LSU.
They should not even be compared.. which is sad as these courses used to be equals.

That really is sad. There was a time not terribly long ago where LSU was vastly superior and Webb was the option only if LSU was crowded.
Nostalgia is tugging at me, so I'm going to bite the bullet and go to LSU today. It has probably been 3 years since I played there. I'll report back later with an update on the conditions

I was told the last time I played there, they were looking for a superintendent to get the greens and fairways straight. I asked them why don't they just go down the street to turf management and was told they are not allowed to touch the course, only offer suggestions. Smdh.

I heard from multiple people earlier this fall it was looking a lot better than previously. I never actually went out there to check it out.

Patience. Patience. I'm here now. Got finished not long before dark and just got home.
Anyways...it wasn't as bad as I thought, but still bad. It was playable, and I actually shot 86 (anything under 90 is a win for me), but still sad.
All of the greens are sandy and a bit bumpy, but in my uneducated opinion, most could be salvaged with a little TLC.
A couple of greens look like they need a total rebuild. 13 green (par 3 by Fred's) is an absolute disaster. And another one on the back 9 (can't remember which one) had patches of sod that had been put together like a quilt.
Several other greens had holes with sand in them in random spots in the middle of the green. Some of the greens also had those annoying little weed-type growths (can't think of what they are called) that makes them even more bumpy.
Oddly enough, I putted pretty well and only had one 3-putt.
The ground surrounding the greens is very soft. It made green-side chipping very difficult, but honestly that course has always had soft spots because it doesn't drain well.
The fairways really could use a good mowing. I didn't lose any balls in the fairway, but the grass was definitely higher than it needed to be and you sometimes couldn't see the ball til you were close to it.
It wasn't crowded at all. I was going to walk, but decided to ride instead in the name of getting done faster. It only cost $15. I played in right at 2 hours and only encountered one group that I had to go around.
It was good to get back out there for the first time in about 3 years. My game has changed a lot (mostly for the better) since I last played there and was curious to get out and make shots on that course that are different than what I was used to.
So in final summary, the course is in crappy condition, but it isn't dead yet. I think it can be salvaged, but it will take effort and money and I'm not sure anyone knows what is going to happen.
For $15, you get what you pay for. I would probably go out there again if I had a couple hours to kill. Golf is golf, afterall. I'd really like to see this course make a comeback.

Seriously, or is this hyperbole?

Ha. No. You can almost walk up and play at Webb anytime.
Tho I only walk

When I lived down there LSU was in great shape. Thought it was a fun, cheap course to play with cool views of Tiger Stadium. Not a bad layout either. Came close to my first hole in one on number 8 when I hit the pin and it bounced out. Would be good for the students and community if they invested some $ into it to make it a viable public course. And yes, I get it, their cheap rates kill public golf in Louisiana.
