Are his descendants still active in Plaquemines politics?

Judge Perez used to be called Goodchildren, that’s all I got. Oh, and get the macaroni and cheese at Rocky’s.

Took la history at lsu ….
We had an entire session on him … all I remember is him rounding up the burr…. On nig…. Island when the gov was coming to visit to hide them…
I forget the prof… he was a lsu and Louisiana legend… I can not really repeat the story as I remember it without getting banned…. I may be remembering it wrong … college memories tend to be hazy…but I think the area is still called that on old maps…

To save myself… those were Perez words not mine and in print from an interview from what I recall… someone asked him about preparations for the Gov’s visit…

My grandfather had an independent Falstaff distributorship, Ole Leander had to give him permission to sell beer down in Plaquamines parish..

This was an eye opening read.

From Wikipedia:
quote:
In 1919, Judge Perez launched a reign of bought elections and strictly enforced segregation. Laws were enacted on Perez's fiat and were rubber-stamped by the parish governing councils. Elections under Perez's reign were sometimes blatantly falsified, with voting records appearing in alphabetical order and names of national celebrities such as Babe Ruth, Charlie Chaplin, and Herbert Hoover appearing on the rolls. Perez-endorsed candidates often won with 90% or more of the ballots. Those who appeared to vote were intimidated by Perez's enforcers. He sent large tough men into the voting booths to "help" people vote. Many voters were bribed. Perez testified that he bribed voters $2, $5, and $10 to vote his way, depending on who they were.

Worked on survey crews during the summers while in college. One summer we worked out of Venice (boat stayed in a rented slip at Ellzey's Marine every night).
One morning we showed up at Ellzey's and the boat was underwater. The bow line was still tied to the dock. We learned two things in short order:
1. The prior day was Leander Perez' birthday. NOBODY was allowed to work on that "sacred" holiday. We didn't know about that rule - it was just a regular work day for us.
2. We weren't the first to learn the hard way - the nice people at Ellzey's immediately directed us to a crane company that could lift the boat and pump out enough water for the boat to float.
The home office in BR had to send us another boat to use while the engines on the "sunken" boat were being rebuilt. Company mechanic said the bilge pump wires had been cut and the drain plug was missing.
Nobody at the company bothered to report this to the Sheriff's Office.

90's renaming of Judge Perez Drive to Judge Perez Drive.
Huh?
To save the expense of re-signing St. Bernard's main street -- while still getting away from Leander's unsavory legacy -- the street was re-dedicated to a different Judge Perez.
Kinda smart if you ask me.

Took LA History with Dr Carleton at LSU in the mid ‘80’s claimed Perez hid the registrars office in the middle of the swamp said if they could find it they could register to vote.

Perez stole so much money from the State. Corruption nowadays pales in comparison.

Two of my greater regrets are not sitting in on a T Harry Williams lecture, and not going to watch the '76 Indiana basketball team play in the Baton Rouge Regional.

I think it was Carleton not Williams ( Williams was who everyone talked about and tried to get) ……..it was an early class and I was usually asleep but I remember him saying those words and my text book had a picture of Perez in front of residents he rounded up and will never forget the quotes in the newspaper … sorta caught me off guard… one of the few classroom experiences I remember from college….
