I need the OB opinion on extended pontoons on an aluminum jon boat.

I am in the market for a small skiff/Jon boat. I am looking at a Wel-Craft at the moment. It has the extended pontoons on the rear. I am hearing bad things about them. Mostly how they make the boat ride bow down and you can’t get it trimmed right. That and they really affect using the boat in reverse.
I even have a friend that has a Tracker Grizzly that wants to cut them off the back of his boat.
I need the Outdoor Boards expertise before I make a bad decision.
Thanks in advance.

if you weigh over 150 pounds, you should have them installed. why go in reverse???

I had them on an old 16' Tim's flat, no issue for me.

Have a custom 20' with the stair step ones. 90hp
Backing up is different, but not a problem.
Turning on plane takes a little getting used to. It fights against it, but the boat drafts very shallow for it's weight. No real complaints.

My 15’ war eagle duck boat has them. It may not turn quite as good in reverse but it’s not a problem by any stretch. Everything else they do is a positive. Really like em

Tell your buddy that is a bad idea. Tracker started putting them on their Grizzly line of boats because the transom welds were cracking from the strain of the heavier motors without them. Not to mention that the arse end will sit even further down in the water than they already do.

I have a 1652 SeaArk Tunnel with a tiller 50hp yama 2 stroke. I purchased Beavertail pods from Cabelas and had a local welder weld them on.
Helped tremendously. Boat planes with ease and helps with rear floatation. I can get that boat real skinny. The only thing it might have affected was top speed, but thats not an issue with me.

Boat hulls are designed for different and often specific reasons.
You left out the important details, of what are YOU going to be using the boat for most often. You aren’t going to find a perfect hull, so don’t expect that. Some hulls are better multi-purpose hulls than others without a doubt, but then they may not do anything well. It rarely makes sense to buy a boat for the family (unless it’s the only way the wife will allow) when you are going to use it for say duck hunting 90% of the time.
Sponsons generally help keep a motor higher which helps to get on plane faster and often with stability. They are certainly likely to effect top end speed as there is more drag and as said can affect turning and reverse.
So again you just need to figure out what you will want/ need and what will help you most often.
All too often I see people not wanting something on a boat that would help them all the time because of the rare instance it makes a small item harder, such as going in reverse.
