What are your goals for the basketball program?

Do you feel like LSU should be a tournament team every few years?
Should lsu be a tournament team with a real contender every year with a run every 4 years?
Tournament team with a contender single year?
Should LSU in your opinion be on the same level as Duke or North Carolina? Which have had some rocky seasons lately. Maybe Gonzaga, should lsu be Gonzaga and go 30-4 every year?
Is it an optics thing? Would you prefer sharper, cleaner basketball but with less talented guys? Essentially build with less talented underclass men for that big run every 3-4 year?
Only reason I ask is I see people who want to fire a top 3 winningest basketball coach in the SEC over the past 5 years over a 1 point loss to top 15 Arkansas team on the road.
That's a tough standard for any coach to live up to and in my lifetime has only been Brady, Johnny Jones and Trent Johnson.
So I'm willing to consider maybe my standards have been lowered by mediocrity. But I remember the national media saying Buzz Williams at Virginia Tech was the best X's and O's coach in the country, better than coach K, yet he struggling in the SEC and Wade hasn't lost to A&M yet (10-0)
So answer realistically with numbers - what is your goal for lsu? Not some ambiguous "I just want high IQ ball"
Also who would replace Wade? It's easy to play Monday morning QB but look around. Who would be better than Wade for us?

Win a SEC title every few years and be competitive
It’s good entertainment that gives a lot of fans something to watch after football until baseball starts

Same here
My goal is a tournament competitive team every year with a real contender every 3-4 year and 1 off year within a 5 year span.
Outside of Kentucky has anyone ever had "more" than this in college basketball in the sec?

What cracks me up are the guys that say Wade waste talent.
Imagine if LSU fans had Calipari with how many years he's had the best team and not won it all.
Or Coach K the year they didn't win it all with Zion, RJ Barrett, Tyus Jones and Cam Reddish.
Lol LSU fans may actually have higher expectations than Kentucky and Duke

This is where I'm at. I'm not under any delusion that the basketball program is ever going to be a powerhouse.

I don't understand the hate to this year. Yes it's not going as good as it started but it's better than preseason projections?
People just need to be aware of the big picture

The fact that as I’m typing this the OP has no upvotes and 2 downvotes demonstrates true delusion in this fanbase. OP has an excellent commentary on realistic expectations for this program.
First of all, you have to pick a sport to be all in on. For Alabama, Ohio St, Clemson, OU, Georgia, etc it’s clearly Football. At Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, Gonzaga, etc it’s clearly Basketball.
At LSU it’s Football. Period. Make no mistake about that. Baseball is a clear 2nd.
So..... with Basketball being the 3rd most passionate and popular sport within the “overall” LSU fan base what are realistic expectations? I get that a lot of fans want a great overall athletic department. But... true greatness in a sport comes with a price. That price is being all in on that one sport like the Alabama’s, Ohio States, Dukes, and Kentucky’s of the world.
LSU under Wade has been very good. Won an SEC Title, made it to the Sweet 16, and made it to the NCAA’s every year, but his first year after he had to completely rebuild the program.
We lost out best player and clearly best shooter before the season started. But.. they are still poised to go to the NCAA tournament. Sure, the team looks inept offensively at times. But... it plays hard almost all the time.
Wade has a great class coming in next year. He has this team highly competitive every single year.
People wanting Wade gone are simply ignorant, unrealistic, idealists with zero understanding of how things actually work in this world.

Dude just stop. Nobody here expects to go to the sweet 16 every year or even the tourney. I'll skip 2/3 our of 5 years if the good 2/3 gets us a good team with a legit chance at elite 8 or final 4...hell even competitive in sweet 16. We haven't had a legit chance at that yet.

That's bs. You are clueless. You can be very successful in multiple sports. LSU has been many times. Florida?

Wade already has us in the tournament every year, and once he makes a deep run, you will see how "big" baseball is at LSU.
Baseball is only #2 at LSU for the time being, because it's a consistent winner. Men's basketball will blow it out of the water once we win consistently at it, and we are well on the way under Wade. I've seen this when Dale had us rolling.
Does anybody know what channel the men's basketball games are on?? They are very hard to find-usually some kind of streaming ESPN+. I have ZERO TROUBLE finding the baseball games because ALL of those are on a national tv network, with it being so popular and all.

If we’re using your logic, LSU is a woman’s track and field school and we shouldn’t expect much success anywhere else.

What Will Wade has done for our basketball team is exactly what I want to see. Every year we are competitive and compete for the SEC Championship.
We have won the SEC under Will Wade and lost in the SEC Tournament last year. That is high level College basketball. I would like to see us go deeper in the tournament in the next few years but what he has done is exactly what I want. Compete in the SEC year in and year out and be a consistent team.

Tournament at an 80% clip, have a second-weekend type team every other year.

When I see pretty peak LSU basketball I'd say:
Be in tournament conversation 8/10 or 9/10 years...basically just be in there or right at it the vast majority of the time
Make a run every so often, tournament is way too hard to predict specifically this or that because it's so much about matchups, but just occasionally see us get into 2nd weekend at least...not going to say this needs to happen every other time we get in tournament or whatever, just needs to happen enough when making the tournament
Getting to F4 once every decade or so would be nice but I wouldnt fire a coach for not getting there if the other conditions are being met as well...some would disagree probably but I would take a consistent tournament team who maybe doesnt make the F4 in a 10 year span over a 10 year span of missing the tournament 5-6-7 years and having 1 deep run

Well that’s just dumb as hell because not a single baseball game has been nationally televised yet this season. They’ve all been on ESPN+
ETA I see that this may be sarcasm but I honestly can’t tell so I’m leaving it

Cal isn’t a good coach. He brings in all the talent then rolls the ball out and tells them to play. He’s great with players on an individual level, like forcing guys to focus on things they need to improve to be better in the NBA.

Yeah Cal runs an NBA factory, not a let's go win stuff in college factory. It's hard to fathom the amount of talent he's brought into Kentucky the last decade plus and he's only won 1 title which came a decade ago now (2012). I do think it's harder to win a basketball NC with the tournament format and how many teams there are, but after Florida won 2 back to back in 2006 and 2007, 4 other schools have won 2 titles in that time frame to now - North Carolina, Duke, UConn and Villanova. They did come close in 2014...but Kentucky hasn't even made the Final Four since 2015 which is just completely shocking to me. Even Baylor and Virginia have won titles since Calipari last made the NC Game.
I know it would seem crazy to ever move on from a coach to make the tournament as much as Cal has and even the deep runs he's had with a title from 2012 and NC appearance in 2014 with another F4 in 2015....but he almost has a little bit of a Les Miles feel to him for Kentucky fans in a way. After last year's disaster if he gets upset in this tournament he may have a large part of that fanbase turn on him.

Standards are set by the recruiting class & the players you have. Just like any other sport.
The recruiting has been great. Almost to a level where LSU would be considered a basketball school.
The results have been good but have yet to take that next step that matches the recruiting classes.

Define compete, and competitive? Most teams compete and are competitive. 2019 we won the sec championship, in year 2 for him. We haven't really "competed" for an SEC championship since then. But, I wouldn't care if we made decent runs in the tourney. Maybe it'll happen this year.
