I would support this if the US Womens soccer team hadn't been demolished by FC Dallas affiliated 15-16 year old boys club in a scrimmage a few years ago.

The mens bonuses were 400 million (total) and womens were 60 million. How did the men get convinced to give that up?

There are certainly jokes to be made.
But, seriously, it's absolutely nuts. These dudes gave up a ton of money to virtue signal.
The women are way better against their respective opponents on the field and are a more successful team, but they make less money. I have no idea why that is hard for people to understand.

The story should be that the USMNT just made an enormous and unnecessary concession and sacrifice to appease the women’s team and to give the men’s team all the goodwill credit, but the “women fight for equal pay against oppressive men” angle will garner more clicks

When I first saw the story I was thinking about how the men would fight this without getting a ton of bad PR.
Their fricking union agreed to this! They willingly did this. A real life example of virtue signaling.

Nobody thinks the worlds best garbage man should make more money than an average neuro surgeon, but for some reason in sports when it comes to women and men people can’t figure it out
If women want to get paid the same, they should play in the mens leagues. Nothing is stopping them, just like nothing is stopping the garbage man from becoming a neuro surgeon

And it’s not like they were playing a bunch of young Mbappes or Ronaldos. The MLS is maybe a top 12 or 15 league in the world and this was the youth team from one organization facing a womens international dynasty

Since the US Women's team is the most dominant soccer team in the world and the US Men's Team can barely qualify for the World Cup, surely they would agree to a winner take all head to head match with the Men's Team for the bonus money, right?

Those numbers represent FIFA's entire payout for the World Cup to all the teams, not how much the US Men and Women got.
The men were probably willing to agree to this because they make the vast majority of their money from club soccer and endorsements and the goodwill they get for supporting "equality" is probably worth the potential loss in prize revenue.
