Taking the family on a ski trip the week before Christmas. My wife is the only one that has been before. Kids will be 2 daughters (14 and 12) and 1 son (6). We will be driving and have narrowed it down to either Angel Fire, NM or Breckinridge, CO. We are trying to get the quotes finalized but Breckinridge doesn’t have equipment rentals or lessons price list out from last year and neither have this years yet. Other than that the rates seem pretty comparable.

Does anyone have any insight they could offer about either of these places? We are planning on doing the lessons and ski the first day plus 3 more lift ticket days. We want to have a free day in there to tube, maybe ice skate, walk around the town etc.

This is a great time to go fwiw and many of the slopes have specials for locals and what not if you go early enough. The earlier you go the further north is better as you are risking no snow/ too warm of weather the further south you go.

If you are driving, you don't necessarily need to narrow it down to Breck as a lot of the Colorado slopes are fairly close to each other.

We are going to Breckinridge for a week after Christmas, flying into Denver and staying at staying at One Ski Hill Place. Would like recommendations on best travel from Denver to Breckinridge.

Ski New Mexico early season? Horrible idea. If you must ski that far south, make sure it's peak season.

You are risking only having man made snow trails by going that early. New Mexico on exasperates the lack of snow issue.

Breck is nice, but normally packed with tourists. It's one of the most popular ski resorts.

What he said. Angel Fire in December is a risk in terms of snow coverage.

Breck is a great family location. Plenty of variety in the ski terrain, the shopping and the restaurants.

We expanded to Breck, Copper Mountain, and Keystone. Scratched Angel Fire. It looks cheaper to buy 2 adult season passes and get 2 kids season passes free. Seems to be the best price based on what we want to do. Can shuttle anywhere else we want to go.

Since you’re driving you can stay in Dillon, Frisco, or Silverthorne and save some money. From any one of these towns you can ski Copper Mtn, Keystone, Abasin, Breckinridge, Loveland, and Ski Cooper. Ski Copper is a great place to learn and it’s extremely inexpensive. It’s a little bit of a drive but it’s not too bad, right outside of Leadville. It was built for the 10th mountain division to train during WWII. Definitely want a 4x4 though for any real driving. I’ve seen people get stuck in the parking lots. We just did a late season trip this April and it was awesome! We started at Cooper for 1 day. Wife and 3 kids had a half day private for $800. Then we skied at Abasin the rest of the trip. Loved Abasin lots of locals and no crowds. Both Abasin and Cooper do not have lodging so they tend to be less crowded. Abasin has an area called the beach where people literally tailgate all day. Pop tents, grills, music, dogs, and lots of pot! We had lunch at the beach everyday. They allow you to bring your own lunch and alcohol.

We actually got a deal on housing @ keystone but they closed the mountain. Our condo with garage was $1200 for a full wk. Easter is a week earlier this year so I think we are going back and won’t have to worry about resorts closing.

FriscoKid with some good advice.

Cooper is an awesome little hill. Not challenging if you're a good skier. Yeah, I guess they have the new backside Tennessee Creek stuff thats double black but I hear its really icy and just runs through trees and can be rocky even peak season...

Better to make the drive to Abasin if youre very capable.
