Flying into Jacksonville and spending a few days in the area in October. Main purpose of the trip will be the LSU/ Florida game in Gainesville but was considering staying somewhere kinda central to the game and the airport. St Augustine looked kinda interesting and I was giving it some strong consideration. Any of y’all been to the area with any recs on things to do /see/eat around there ?

Thanks in advance.

St. Aug is great. Find an airbnb close to the downtown area and walk around and enjoy the bars/restaurants/shops.

Check out O'Steens. They're fried shrimp is awesome

We just got back from a St. Aug trip.

The girlfriend wanted a beach trip, so we stayed on Vilano Beach within walking distance of the beach and the grocery store. There are tons of rentals on Vilano.
Anastasia Island is the other island, but it's much more crowded and city like. If staying on Anastasia, you'll also have to deal with the draw bridge traffic.
It was only a 5 minute drive across the bridge to the St. Aug historic district. We parked in the garage, and everything was within walking distance.

All the action is centered around St. George Street.
The Tini Martini bar had horribly weak drinks and service.
No Name Bar was our favorite drinking spot. The bartenders were friendly and entertaining.

Lunch at the Columbia restaurant and get a pitcher of their Mojito. The Crab Croquettes and the Cuban sandwich were delicious. https://www.columbiarestaurant.com/
We loved the burgers at Burger Buckets. They're at the beginning of St. George street and are open late, BTW.

Skip the Fountain of Youth tourist trap.

Sailing on a catamaran was the highlight of the trip. We used Eco tours. The boat fits a max of 6 people. Much better than the larger boat with 50+ people. https://staugustineecotours.com/sailing/

Good info. I really appreciate it. We were debating between st Augustine or goin over to universal in Orlando for Halloween horror nights. Definitely leaning st aug bc I’ve never been there.

Vilano Beach

We stayed here when we went to St. Augustine. Sand is a little rough, but nice and quiet there and very convenient to downtown.

I love St Augustine, it’s a cool little place. However, it’s really nowhere near the Forgotten Coast.

There was a definite shell line, but the beach was just fine near the ocean.

BTW, OP, you can drive on the beach in St. Augustine.

Hurricane Michael forced my wife and I to make a last min. honeymoon change a few years back, and we ended up in St. Augustine. Its a quaint little town with a big artsy community if you're into that type of thing. Lots of little local art shops (think a clean, safe version of Royal St. in NOLA). The lightner museum is a very interesting place -sort of a giant cabinet of curiosities. We stayed at the Old Powder House B&B and were pleasantly surprised by it. Plenty of good restaurants in walking distance. Don't expect a great beach though.
