Will be flying into Venice in May for a cruise. Gonna spend 3 days prior to cruise to see a few things within an hour or so drive/ train ride.
Never been before. Any recs on what would be best to spend that time on?

Harry's Bar. Have a bellini.

ETA: Grab a bottle of wine, olives, cheese and crackers from one of the numerous shops. Sit near the Rialto bridge and just enjoy the day. We liked Venice. Lots of hustle and bustle in the tourist areas but we were in no hurry so it was fun. St Marks is an interesting tour and Cafe Florian is another spot to grab a glass of wine on the square.

Best part is to just get lost and wander around off the beaten path, go to hole in the wall restaurants. Rick Steve’s book used to have a guide about that. Don’t do a gondola on the main canal with all the boats, do one in the quiet canals. Take a boat to murano island and watch glass making and buy cool glass stuff

We did all of this. We stayed on Lodi and used a vaporetto to get to and from Venice. Gondola ride was great one evening. The dude spoke perfect english and even worked at DisneyWorld.

Go to the island nearby where they make glass. It's pretty cool. Murano Island.

With only 3 days I would just spend time in Venice, and take a half day trip to either Murano or Burano (Burano is better in my opinion, much more beautiful and less crowded).

Wander around, get lost. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Venice is riddled with horrible tourist traps so you really really do have to do some research to find good restaurants, but they are there. Do not eat Pizza. Venice is not a pizza city, woodburning ovens aren't even allowed. Any pizza there will be shite specifically for tourists.

Venice does get CRAZY crowded during the day, but at night once all of the people not actually staying venice leave, its lovely, so I recommend actually staying in Venice for those nights.

Another tip is if I recall correctly, you can buy multiday Vaporetto passes at the main train station. Vaporetto's are the water buses that take you around the canals. They are significantly cheaper than taking the small private water taxis.

We went this summer and had an awesome day in Venice and wished for more. We did the Gondola even though I didn't want to and I'm glad we did. Did the glass tour and it was pretty cool, that stuff is crazy expensive. We celebrated Mass in St. Mark's Basilica and were blown away with the extravagance of it. Hope you enjoy your time there.

We brought back a cactus inspired wine stopper. It reminded us of Texas.

Bottom line is to take it easy. As others above said get lost, just chill. Stop to have a glass of wine and enjoy. The nights are better as already mentioned. The people there are very hospitable. Breath deep and enjoy.

Stay in Venice. You can take a boat ride to one of the islands, but I wouldn’t drive anywhere. Just walk around and soak in the ambiance. The beaten path is the corridor between St Mark’s and the Rialto and that is where the crowds are, but the best atmosphere can be found when you venture off in to the back alleys.

One of the best views Venice is from the roof of the department store at the foot of the Rialto Bridge and it is free.

We've visited Venice several times. For a 1st time quick trip you should find tours that suit your interests.

For food and drink I highly recommend LINK

Mario and his American wife Rachel are both food/drink experts and enjoyable guides/companions. They offer small group food & wine tours of Venice and wine tours by van to other towns nearby. I hope Covid hasn't impacted their business greatly.

Everyone is right about the back streets. Wife and I spent an afternoon just strolling around. Would love to go back for another day and hit the rest of the city. They have a small square just south of St. Marks with a great cafe.

Venice is 1 of those places that you either hate or love. I love Venice.

Get you a cheap map from a gift shop when you get there or find 1 online. There are only 4 bridges that cross the Grand Canal, so planning your route depends on which bridge you take. As others have said, get away from the tourist routes and find your own little places to explore. Get out early and stay out late to avoid the cruise ship tourists if there is a ship in port. I am not sure if there are still "street vendors" still around but ignore them and keep on walking if they try to engage in conversation.

The website below will provide info on all churches of Venice if that interests you.

Can't provide a link because the website is not secure. It is not secure because a guess he doesn't sell anything.

Padua, Vicenza and Verona are short train rides from Venice and are a nice visit if you choose to visit the mainland.
