Gravity's Rainbow by Pynchon - if you've read it, what edition?

I know that subsequent to the first edition, they reworked some of the paginations that screw up reading it in accompaniment with some of the explainer articles. But first editions are insanely expensive (four figures) and even Viking (the original publisher) hardcover reprints are over $100. Not sure if a later Penguin editions change much, if anything.

I tried a couple of times and just did not get it at all. It was hard for me to get into.

Yeah, I'd like to give it a go, and apparently it's very enjoyable to read along with a companion piece. Just don't want to shell out for a first edition if I don't have to, unless I happen upon one in a used book store.
Btw, if you're interested in Pynchon's style but in a more digestible form, you may want to check out Nightwood by Djuna Barnes. It was written in 1936 but has seen somewhat of a resurgence in popularity recently. Off the charts writing and descriptions.
