How often do amateur's *cough* cheat *cough* in tournaments?

Played in a 4 man scramble Monday, winning team shot 18 under. No problem, I've seen that numerous times, I've done it before. But this one bothered me. Winning team was in the group behind us so we could pretty much follow them play on numerous holes. They were a good team, no doubt, one guy was easily scratch, and the others were 70's-90's. I saw about 4 holes they pared, and a par 5 they birdied. Didn't see their other 3 par 5's but one one of the holes was playing brutally hard, I can't imagine anyone eagling it. Course was playing extremally tough, with 20 mph consistent winds with higher gusts and greens weren't sticking at all. When it was over, they said the eagled all 4 par 5's. Ugh.
Also, it was a shotgun start, and I had the closest to the pin with only the two groups behind me to have the chance to beat it. 205 yard par 3 with a tough pin position and wind dead in your face. I hit it to 11 ft (shows you how tough it was playing if that was the closest through 16 groups). Saw the group behind us par and the group behind them were all over the place. BUT, the final group had the tournament host. You see where this is going. Announcing the winners, they get to that par 3, and the host goes, "and closest to the pin... me. 9 foot!"
You ever see stuff like this happen? My team didn't have a shot at winning and it was still fun, but it still really got on my nerves. But hey, maybe they did shoot -18 under and the 65 year old host got closest to the pin in the last group, but it was fishy.

Every charity tournament I've ever played has multiple groups going low, sometimes 20+ under. It's complete bullshite. I've always thought it would be fun to have the 2 best scores at the end of the round play a playoff for everyone to witness. That way you could see what those groups' real skill level is.

Every charity/special event type 4-person scramble tournament always has this shite happen. I hate playing in them. I'll only do it if work signs up a team to play in a tournament one of our clients' are sponsoring.
There's so much rampant cheating in these things. I don't know why people do it. And the tournaments where you can
"buy a mulligan" are even worse. Group buys one mulligan and uses it on every hole or every time they miss a putt.

Yep always. I did play in a scramble one time that was a feeder for a tournament in Pebble Beach. They had a ride along scorer with each group to keep people honest. Safe to say that nobody shot -18 that day.

This is why you are starting to see more 3-man, scrambles with two teams on each box and 6 hour tournaments.

When you can pay $10 for mulligans and $50 to tee off from the front tees on a par 5, cheating is to be expected. I wouldn’t expect any scramble to have a legitimate winner.

There’s an easy way to stop all of the cheating in these charity scrambles. I played in a 4 man scramble once and they put two teams on each hole. Basically playing 8 per hole. It didn’t move that slow and the winning score came in at 8 under.

Our country club pairs 2 teams together on every hole and team 2 has to keep team 1's score and vice versa to prevent this type of stuff. The tournaments take ~6 hours or so to play 18 holes but it keeps people honest.

Played in a scramble in Jackson, MS once in a off and on pouring rain the group in front of us was struggling and holding us back, the group behind us had 2 guys from the Mississippi State golf team. Guess who won with 22 under. The funny part is they was watching us and told my friend that the way we were playing, they thought we was going to win. My friend said we shot 7 under because we didn't cheat, the guy just walked away. The team with the MSU players shot 16 under I think for 2nd place.
I also played with a guy that put down a birdie after we made a par. I asked "why would you do that". His reply was he spent to much money on this tournament to lose. Of course as soon as we finished, I left. We won by one stroke.

Group behind us on Monday shot a very legit -18. Honestly expected them to go lower, but the wind was howling for much of the day

Played in one two weeks ago that was $200 per person to enter. We get to the fifth tee and see two girls sitting there and we were hoping it was beer. Instead a girl tells us that for $200 EACH, we can tee off for the 100 yard marker. For $100 each, the girl would tee off for us and we could use her shot. The reasoning for that is because she's a "professional".
I get up there and launch one over the trees and cut the corner. My buddy tells her that he would just like to see her hit so she gets up there and she is aiming straight where I was to cut the corner. I was thinking in my head that I'll donate the $800 if she clears those trees. She very well might be a better golfer than me teeing off from the ladies tee's, but just on physical strength alone, she wasn't clearing those trees. She hits it and it slams a tree about halfway up and it kicks to the right almost in the water.
As we were getting in our carts she goes "well at least you got to see a professional hit."

I've put together a lot of company tournaments for charity over the years...
where it's supposed to be about golf course management...
there are "teams" that are all about score card management...
as long as the charity made out I didn't care but it took me a while to get over the cheating...

Yea, really frustrating.
I did a tournament on the 15th for just friends. I tried to balance the teams where you had an A, B, C, and D player on every team. If you didn't have an A player, you could have three B's, or no B, you could have three C's, etc. Only charged $20 over the green fee and every penny plus a few hundred out of my pocket went to gifts and trophies, no cash money prizes.
Top three scores were -10, -10, and -9. Makes it a lot better when EVERYONE is playing just for fun.

years ago I had one out at Briarwood...the morning groups had perfect weather and the top teams put some great scores up...when the afternoon teams teed off the weather had turned horrible with rain and wind...
when the "team" turned in their card and won the club pro knew they cheated and announced the winning "team" saying
"and the winner is team X...gentlemen let your conscience be your guide"
everyone boooo'd them out of the clubhouse...

My golf league does a competitive scramble that’s played by the books. We have about 100 guys, including several scratch and plus handicaps (couple former golf pros) and I think the best score ever was -12. Mind you these are assigned teams with one player from each flight, so there aren’t stacked teams like charity scrambles, but point being, nobody shooting 18-22 under legitimately without gimmicks

I think the answer is pretty obvious. But if you’re playing in a fundraising tournament you know it’s going to happen. Just go have a fun day on the golf course & actually enjoy a round.
Also, the Bishop of the Diocese of Alexandria has a tournament each year. And yes it happens there too. I think the winner gets their entry fee back & maybe absolution. ??
