Bama-Lsu Question

As a Bama fan, it is quiet clear who is the greatest coach in our history. BUT, who do you think is the best in your history? Would you say Saban?

I would say Saban. He rebuilt the LSU program and brought us our first Natl title in 45 years.
A lot of people will say Charles McClendon, but by today's standards, he would be considered a mediocre/slightly above avg coach. If lsu were to hire a coach like this today, he wouldn't last 5 years

Maybe Deitzel or Miles for LSU....not Saban because he didn't stay long enough to win that "legendary status" for LSU....he might have been able to win that status if he'd stayed, but 3-4 seasons does not make for a "greatest" in my book....
maybe for BAMA if he can close the deal for 5-10 yrs with 10+ wins consistently and 2-3 NC's.....you'd be calling him "Nick, the Golden Bear" Saban (reference to Jack Nicklaus' nickname to those who don't follow golf)....
since Bryant didn't have the tarnished image that Saban has had to shoulder in his recent past (some of which may have been overly harsh), I doubt you guys will ever put Saban that high on your list.

McClendon was overated per a couple of players I talked to that played under him. Deitzal was decent, not sure how long he stayed at LSU. Don't remeber much about Arnsbarger but someone was telling me the other day that he was good. Tossup between Saban and Miles. Have to wait another five years or so.

Not a flame, my dad went to LSU and we were having this discussion the other day.

No. Les Miles.

Nothing against Miles, but Saban deserves reversing the trend of good players leaving the state. As far as greater coaches; probably had some better that had alot less to work with. I sometimes wonder what LSU could have done if Eddie Robinson had been the coach and there wasn't the period of exclusion during the 50's, 60's, and 70's.

It is Miles without a doubt. Will definitely have greater longevity than other recent coaches. Also, will have more SEC titles and NC's in the not to distant future.
Yea, it's MILES!

Miles has the potential to be the greatest in LSU history, but is not there yet.
Saban was a great coach for LSU, but didn't do any more for Tiger football than Dietzel (both had two conference championships and one national championship). When Dietzel came in, the LSU program had sunk to the bottom and was showing no signs of moving up - Saban came after Dinardo had made some progress (albeit he had regressed somewhat). Dietzel did much more to put the Tigers into national prominence than Saban.

First, Charles McClendon,
then Saban and Miles in second, two close to call, with Miles gaining ground.
then Paul Dietzel

Let's take a look at that one, Sparky...
First of all, Dietzel was, basically a one-year wonder, 1958, with a (sort of) resurgence in 1961. His first three years were: 3-5-2, 3-7, & 5-5, for a total of 11-17-2 (which today would definitely get him fired). Of his two great seasons, 1958 and 1961, Coach Mac's defense allowed a whopping 110 pts through 22 games (that's 5 pts allowed/game).
Now, Coach Mac comes in and doesn't lose over a season until his FOURTEENTH season, which was his only losing season over the entire 18 year run. Out of his 18 seasons, 6 were 9 win seasons (including a 9-1-1 in '62 and 9-1 in '69 which should be given the same weight as a 10-win season today), and 11 were 8 or 9 win seasons. The 1969 squad, which declined a Bowl invitation was quite obviously the best team in the country, and along with the Dietzel's 1961 (again, DCed by Cholly Mac) the 1969 team was the best LSU team to not play for a national championship.
Coach Mac also NEVER did anything to disrespect the university, despite being from Arkansas and having played for Kentucky for the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant, had his dream job in Baton Rouge.
IF Miles can keep up these 11-2s and 10-3s for a couple of more years and wins another SEC championship or possibly a BCS, THEN, and only then can someone lay claim to Coach Mac's status as LSU's greatest coach ever.
Doesn't somebody have to win 100 games at LSU to even be mentioned in the same breath as someone who won 137? Heck Bernie Moore won 83 games (but no championships) and LSU in the final Top 10 three times.
