Andy Reid: Teams only need seven players at these four positions to win in the NFL

Saw this interesting passage about Andy Reid's team building philosophy during his days with the Eagles.
Do you agree with Reid that teams should only invest resources to have top players at QB, OT, CB, and 3-4 OLB/4-3 DE to win in the NFL?

The Eagles build from the inside-out. They're transparent about that both in their words and actions. Since Howie Roseman first became general manager in 2010, Philadelphia has used seven of its 11 first-round picks on offensive or defensive linemen. That philosophy dates to the early days of coach Andy Reid, who once reportedly told the team, "I want two offensive tackles, a quarterback, two pass-rushers, two corners, and I’ll figure the rest out."

It is no longer football

If you are terrible at those positions, it is crippling.
Reid has a good point. There are always teams like the Commanders that go 7-9 because their talent is in the wrong spots on the field.

I think it's obvious in today's game that a top TE should be on this list now, too.

That's the most important positions to be good at and that's not really a groundbreaking philosophy.
But that's not what he does. They've got a ton invested in Kelce and he drafted Clyde early for really a cherry on top and that's backfired.

I’d toss in WR

He’s dead nuts right. I ’ve remained dominant season after season on Retro Bowl investing all my coaching credits at those spots.

That's not what he said and is completely out of context.
But you'll prolly get some attention. No way it will be enough though, will it?

Patriots won 3 out of 4 Super Bowls in the early 2000s with Troy Brown, Deion Branch, and David Givens as their leading receiver.
If that's not modern enough for you the 2018 Patriots leading receiver was Julian Edelman.

If you look at the Saints draft the last 5-7 years it’s mostly Oline, DEs, a CB. I recognize this year is a bad year but overall it’s been successful .
Unfortunately we’ve choked away playoffs with an aging QB. Getting the QB is the hard part, just a few good ones available

Throw in a great kicker and punter and I agree.

I don’t disagree about the punter but 100% agree about kicker. Easily win you 3-5 games a year, especially how close so many games are

He's right.
If you have a top 5 QB.
Pro bowl DE, LT, and CB. The rest can be fill in.
Saints had that from 2018-2020.
Brees
Armstead/Ramczyk
Lattimore
Jordan
Missed with Davenport. Had that trade never happened then Hendrickson would be there and those picks could have been depth.

It also helps if that QB is named Patrick fricking Mahommes...

Yep and tried in vain to find that second CB that could really play opposite lattimore and put us over the top. When there was decent CB opposite lattimore the defense really brushed being elite.

QB is arguably the most important position in team sports.
That aside, the other positions have more one-on-one battles than the others. If you don’t have guys who can consistently win those battles it is tough to find other ways to account for them

The line is one thing you can't really scheme around.
QB is obviously the most important position.
CB's allow so much freedom for defensive scheming.
I mean it's a good philosophy. Nobody ever says, well.we had the best RB's and WR's that's why we won the SB.

WR's are definitely a lot more important now than they used to be but look at Tyreek Hill(gave up 5 draft picks and a huge contract) going from KC to Miami. Sure he's racking up the stats but KC is still battling for the #1 seed in the AFC and Miami is out of the playoffs as of now. Another example is Devonte Adams for the Raiders, sure he's awesome but no playoffs for them with that huge contract.

quote:What the quote leaves out is the expectation of the need for league average players filling the other positions.
Reid has a good point.
You must have your great/best players at the positions Reid says but it's the relentless competence - league average performance or slightly better - of your guys at the other positions that allows your monster talents to perform to their elite levels.
