Spinoff: What does it mean to be a man?

After looking at the "tips to be strong" thread I wanted to ask as simple question: What does it mean to be a man? Similarly, what is required in order to be a man?
I'm not talking biology. I'm talking behavior - once the biological question is answered, what do you have to do in order to satisfy the requirements of manhood, to be accepted in society as a man, and so forth.
We all know there are political and social movements to chip away at men and masculinity.
I'm curious if we can drill down to some first principles here and look at what they are trying to chip away at.
My initial take would be this:
A man must at least attempt / be will to, and ideally be able to -
1) Protect
2) Provide
3) Be industrious
4) Face danger and difficulty with courage and calm
Because humans are social and live in groups, I think a man needs to check the box on two of those to be accepted into society as a "man", not just a biological male. For mating, meaning be acceptable for selection by a female, I think a man needs to hit 3 of the 4. Ideally, every man tries to, and is pretty adequate at covering all 4.
It's a bit relative to determine if you check the box on "protect" etc, so there's some ambiguity here, of course. But I think we can all get in the same ballpark on these things, at least for discussion purposes.
Has anyone given thought to this?

It starts with organization with other men in the community effort to protect, provide, defend.
The foundation of civilization isn't even the family. Before that you must have the organization of men in a collective effort to set governing standards, food production, defense, etc.

What makes a man, is it the power in his hands?
Is it his quest for glory?
Give it all you got, to fight to the top,
So we can know your story.
What makes a man, is it the woman in his arms,
Just 'cause she has big titties?
Or is it the way he fights everyday?
No, it's prob'ly the titties.
Oh and doing shite like this

Are you suggesting that religion, the enlightenment, liberalism (old school type) got it wrong? They put forth the family and individual as the fundamental units in a society.

1) Life is a series of choices; always make the next right choice.
2) Do right by everyone.
3) Love mercy.
4) Walk humbly with God.
5) ALWAYS keep your word.

doing what i have to do to achieve a desired result, regardless of circumstances. doing the right thing without anyone needing to know about it. taking success and failure in stride, waking up the next day and doing it all over again.

Going to work and providing for your family. Even if your menstrual cramps are particularly painful that morning.
