Getting my first colonoscopy and upper endoscopy done next week

Is the prep as awful as people say it is? Not gonna lie I’m a little nervous about it

Upper is a walk in the park. Just can’t eat after midnight so get an early appointment. I had my first colonoscopy last year. I heard the horror stories but my prep honestly wasn’t bad at all. My doc said my insurance actually gave me access to the good stuff. Other than shitting like a Canada Goose for most of the evening it wasn’t as unpleasant as I thought.

You just pee out your butt for about 8 hours. It’s really not that bad.

Did they give you propofol for anesthesia?

I got it. Knocks you out fast.

Was there any post-colonoscopy bleeding in your stools afterwords?

Might I ask your age? I’ve not done this yet but may be due, soon.

No blood for me. I couldn’t tell they had done anything except for a bit of extra goo when I wiped.

I’m only 23 but I’ve been having issues with constant gas, bloating, constipation, and nausea that’s been going on for months. I decided to get it done just to rule out any serious disease

I’m guessing they didn’t remove any polyps at all on yours. I’ve read of people who got polypectomies during their scope and had MASSIVE amounts of bleeding post-op

I hope things go well! For what it’s worth, both of my elderly parents have done these and reported no ill affects.

Thanks. You hear a lot of people say, “you’re too young to have a colonoscopy”, but the truth is that younger people are getting higher rates of colon cancer. My GP said that the screening age for colon cancer will be lowered down to 35-40 within the next 10 years due to the increasing statistics of colon cancer in younger people

Yes. Yes it is but the nap you have after the procedure more than makes up for it. Enjoy!

Ask them to use the same scope for a discount. They will do your colonoscopy, wipe the scope off, and then use it again for your EGD. Saves you and insurance quite a bit!

I’ve had 3 so far. First they removed 4 polyps. No bleeding after. This is a cakewalk. If they didn’t tell you you had one, you’d never know it. People like to scare people like you for shits and giggles. Propofol is great. Recovery is fast. No grogginess. Prep is simple as long as you don’t leave the house. Quit listening to scary stories. The IV is the worst part for me and that’s quick. Good luck.

I also had a polyp removed and no bleeding. I’ve had 2. I was nervous for the first one by almost looked forward to the second one for the great nap.

Colonoscopies are not the be-all end-all they are represented to be. I’ve told this story on here before but I will repeat it just so you’ll have the awareness.
My wife complained of abdominal pain about a year and a half ago. We figured it was gallbladder.
She went to the doctor and ended up having stage four colorectal cancer.
Well in searching for the primary source they gave her a colonoscopy and it came back clean - no indications. We ended up at MD Anderson and they wanted to do their own colonoscopy being aware that the first one came back clean.
So they did a very extensive colonoscopy and it came back clean as well. The doctor Who performed the procedure was visibly shaken.
She does have stage four colorectal cancer of unknown origin.
She’s been on chemotherapy since last January and will be on chemotherapy until she goes on hospice care which according to the doctors will be in about 15 months.
She is currently going through hell on chemo just to perhaps buy a few extra months.
The implications of that are pretty frightening.
I am sharing this because you can never have too much information in these matters.
Good luck to you. I wish for you the best outcome.

Sounds like the OP may have some anxiety issues.
The endoscopic procedures are literally no big deal. People do this without any sort of sedation, so with anesthesia it's very smooth
The prep is 1 bad night of sleep and maybe some dehydration the following day

I had my first earlier this year. Here is my two cents:
I opted for the gallon of stuff to drink instead of the pills, and glad I did. The amount of liquid in my stomach definitely curved my apatite, and once I got the process figured out, I was able to kind of regulate the amount of pissing out of my butt. I'd gulp down about 20oz at a time, and knew that within 20 mins I was going to be shitting. So I would give a couple hours sometimes between drinks, so that my a-hole would get a little break. Can't do that with the pills. You just have to pop those, and hold on! So I was able to get some sleep, and kind of control my hunger. All in all, it wasn't all that bad, but I am very grateful that I have a bidet. It came in extremely handy.
