Not sure if anyone has been following this story, but last year it was announced that on July 1st 2023, the nation's largest cell carriers would be able to go ahead and activate massive 5G expansions.

The problem was that this had the potential to really mess with many planes systems. So all airlines were told to upgrade their systems or they may not be able to fly after July 1st.

Some 20% of planes still have not been upgraded, so our fearless leader, Pete Buttiegieg, has announced that any plane that does not meet these standards would be grounded if there is anything resembling low visibility or poor weather. There is a decent amount of bad weather predicted for the East Coast this weekend.

Right in time for what is predicted to be one of the busiest 4th holiday travel weeks of all time.

If you're flying this weekend (I am), you may experience some serious issues. Most of the major airlines have fully upgraded though, fyi.

I guess they are just getting caught up from lots of delays and cancellations in the northeast due to weather.

I hope this issue that you bring up ends up not being a big deal.

Well a quick look at the forecast implies this is gonna be a shite show. Can't wait to fly back to NY on 7/2 on a CRJ900 that is likely part of that 20% of planes.

Do we know what types of planes have not been upgraded yet?

Cuse,

I've been hearing one of the slimy trial lawyer ads on the radio recently asking people to sign up for a lawsuit against Southwest Airlines for their major screw ups during the Christmas/NY holidays.

You think this has any chance to be a real thing? I kind of thought Airlines kind of had protection from stuff like this.

They're not even close to caught up yet . United has been a mess at Newark, Delta just as bad as LaGuardia, and JetBlue at JFK. I haven't seen this many cancelled flights in a long time.

The only good news is if you are flying and have some flexibility you should be able to make a lot of $$ on oversold flights

I have been trying to find this answer as I am flying on a likely candidate on Saturday.

All I have seen mentioned is some "older planes".

Most of the major carriers have fully upgraded.

I'm flying on a regional airline on Saturday, July 1st

FYI this is making many national headlines, was on Fox News yesterday, etc.

Where you flying to/from? I wonder if they're going to try and use this as a bigger excuse than the air traffic control issues plaguing NY and DC area airports? My flight yesterday morning out of Newark had no bad weather at 6am but ATC had to reroute us 3 times according to the pilots.

Why does the FTC allow the phone companies to unilaterally interfere with aircraft safety and navigation systems? Seems dangerous

Delta just as bad as LaGuardia

I can attest to this.

I purposely picked JFK instead of LGA for my flights to Buffalo this weekend. Those small runways with thunderstorms and shitty operations don't mix well

Found an article that describes specific airlines

quote:

Meanwhile, however, companies such as Delta claim supply-chain issues are preventing it from finishing its retrofits of roughly 190 narrow-body planes, including all of its Airbus A220 jets and some of its Airbus fleet. JetBlue doesn’t expect all of its 17 A220 jets to be upgraded until October, but believes the delay will only incur a “limited impact” to its services.

Looks like mainly the A220s. You'd be good on either Spirit or Southwest as they don't have the A220

My wife and daughter are stuck in DC right now because of this. They were grounded in Newark last night. Took a train to DC this morning. Looking like they are finally getting out of DC tonight.
