PGA Jr League Worse Than Travel Ball

My daughter is playing PGA Jr league for the first time. She is an above average player but we just started competitions other than DCP this year. She just turned 12. First off the parents are nuts and don’t know shite about golf. I was keeping score and the one dad told me I was doing it wrong. He called their coach over to set me straight, turns out I was right. I told him I had been playing golf longer than he had been alive, which was true. Most of the parents fill up a cooler and drink the whole time, all while trying to give Jaxson a golf lesson during competition. It takes 3 hours to scramble 9 holes. I also learned it’s common practice for real good players to play for teams in other states in order to build a super team to make nationals. Try to do something to get kids to learn the game and the adults frick it up everytime.

Both of my sons do it for the last couple of years and it has been a great experience. I'm not opposed to grabbing a Bloody Mary from the clubhouse and cruising the course. I let them do their thing as they are well mannered and know whats up.

Yeah, that's the most interesting part of your post to leave us hanging on. I played with a father and son a couple of wees ago, and the kid had a PGA Jr shirt on. The dad was a club pro, so he knew what he was doing with the kid. He never corrected him mid shot process, and the only time he fussed at him was for etiquette things. I'd really like to emulate that if my son gets into golf when he gets older.

I helped a friend start a Junior Tour in our area several years ago. One thing that always had to be stressed is to write the actual score in the card. Too many kids and parents were lazy and just wrote down +1, +2 as a relation to par score on each hole. I guess they were afraid to do the math at the end.

So in the match the 9 is broken down into 3 groups of three holes, after three holes you either win or tie for a flag. We started on #9 so i wrote the scores down on the card under hole 9 he argued it should be written down as hole 1. He bitched about it for 7 holes saying if it cost them a flag he would ask at the end. Turns out he asked after hole 7 they had already lost the other 2 flags and their coach said yeah just play knowing you already lost the last hole and try and win hole 6 and 7 which they lost both those as well.

I caddie for my daughter in her 9 hole events and I get the yardage and give her a couple options. I may mention in between shots if I see an easy setup issue but I rarely mention anything about swing mechanics once we leave the driving range. Most of this first year has been how to stay out of the way of the other players and learning what it takes to avoid big numbers when you are out of position.

Doing it for the first time this year with my 8 year old who is above average for his age and it’s awful. My club has done such a poor job running it and relating the expectations and keeping them consistent to parents. It’s also like you said a bunch of non golfer parents (usually the moms) riding around not wanting their little baby to get too hot, carry their bag or typically follow the rules and etiquette of golf.
Will not do it again, the “coach” we got paired with does nothing during the practices except work with the 5 year olds who have never swung a club before, and during the matches he relies on the dads who play to try and basically run the matches and control the golf novice obnoxious parents.
ETA: I’m all about growing the game for kids and giving kids access to golf, I never had that growing up and my game suffers from teaching myself in high school to this day, but I’ve noticed the kids who’s parents are club members and have one or both parents that play golf do much better and are not obnoxious. Limiting the access, at least in my case to members of the club would probably improve the experience. Have a separate division that’s open if they want to allow access to all.

I have to help with practice and run the putting green. I try to emphasize eliminating 3 putts and proper setup, but you are correct it’s hard to get anything done in a 1hr practice with 8-12 kids. It might be for the best that they leave your kid alone, one of our coaches told my kid to put their right thumb down the right side of the shaft to help close the face

Yeah, it’s just not at all what they sold it as when they got us to sign up. He was looking forward to it but so far he’s just gotten paired with 5 year olds and has had to play his own ball basically against older kids.

have my first on the way. If he wants to play golf then he will get lesson with a pro. If we play together, i won't give him tips because I would be pissed if some 15 handicapper tried to correct my game too

Look at operation 36 too. I like that it emphasizes the short game and can still have some competition for small kids.

Its one thing if they are blatantly cheating, but I remember a kid trying to call a penalty on me for pulling the flag out and holding it while I tapped in a putt on the lip. Maybe it was a penalty, but it didn't help me in any way.

We went all the way to the Regionals the past two years - it only gets worse the further along and it’s all ringer teams at the top where kids are really hundreds of miles apart and are super teams…
Concept is good but execution is most often nonsense - my youngest still does it for the social interaction and my oldest actually coaches now - but the matches often devolve into the worst of spots parents with the alcohol haha

Bums me out to hear this. I think PGA Junior league is such a good idea. Talk to any parent of kids who play sports and play golf, they’ll tell you the biggest obstacle to getting them more into golf is the lack of teammates and the team atmosphere. Creating a team sport for the kids that is golf is perfect, of course stupid arse competitive adults will frick it up.
You should tell them that if little Bobson was really that great he’d be playing in the USGA youth tournaments and not hacking it around in PGA Jr league

Well technically both are right. I have my parents start from 1 no matter what. This is due to if one team wins the first two holes, you start the second match on the third. This also speeds up play. Each match starts at 1/4/7. A team wins the first two holes (1&2) we X 3 and start hole 3 as 4 on the card.
You do not start a new “flag” before finishing one. It’s 3 consecutive holes.

My son started playing high school golf last September, as a freshman.
At the first tournament of the season, the coach asked me to help him. He said he couldn't be on 4 or 5 different holes at one time. After the round he walks up to me and says what did my son and the other kid shoot? I told him my son was 6 over par, and the other kid was 5 over. He looked at me with a confused look, and asked "what does that mean"?
