Garage Door Spring busted

Yesterday. Guy coming out today to fix/replace in the next hour. I imagine the other springs could do the same any moment (they’re old). Anything to look/ask about so I don’t get duped? Told me it’d be $250 for the repair with no service charge.

They sell the springs in pairs, so he should replace both

My door has two, they typically replace both springs if one breaks. At least that's been my experience. If you have multiple doors, it will be a function of cycles. If you use one door more than the other(s) and that is the one that broke, you may have several more years on those spring(s). If you use them about the same, there is a reasonable chance you will be doing this again soon but they are not really predictable.

He replaced both in about 35 minutes. $396 total. He said the other door’s springs were fine. I asked him if wd-40 would help and he said that’s the last thing you want to use. Didn’t give me a recommendation though for what to use instead every couple months.

I think they usually recommend silicone grease, lithium grease or similar. They have it in an aerosol so you can get your springs really well. In fact I think aerosol application is typically recommended.
WD-40 isn't going to hurt at all and better than nothing. But not that effective once it dries out. Not sure if the guy was implying that WD-40 would cause damage of some type but I can assure you it will not. Won't really help you in a few days unless you reapply it. You would have to reapply WD-40 regularly. There is much better stuff out there.

Thank you. Yes I was present when it popped. It was loud as hell and scared the hell out of us. Didn’t do any damage to my car thankfully. I looked right at the spring from the kitchen door and it was drooping.

I've used white grease aerosol once a year without any problems.
Also, WD-40 makes a spray gel.

WD-40 is not a bad product but for anything where another type of grease or lubricant is used, it can actually wash out that lubricant. Silicone, Teflon, or lithium grease. The one another poster linked to is what I generally use.

I paid $350 to have two replaced recently. My door is a little bigger than the normal garage door so this seems about right.

This, if one is bad replace both.
