Wanting to visit Oregon or Wahington this summer, not Portland or Seattle. The old TD threads on this area mention traveling around. What's a good central location to stay for 7 days with plenty of hiking and lake activities?

All great options but also consider Vancouver and Victoria which are two great vacation destinations a ferry ride away from each other.

Friend,
Our own TulaneLSU spent a considerable amount of time there just this summer and has wonderful lists and reviews that you should check out. One thing to skip would be Kurt Cobain's home town.

North Cascades or Olympic national Park area including lake crescent for WA. Plenty to do in either spot

There’s been some great trip postings lately on that area. I get tons of great ideas on routes and places from them. Check them out they won’t disappoint.

North Cascades. Maybe use Bellingham as a base.

Friend,
Perhaps these links will give you a taste of the beautiful PNW:
Hiking North Cascade Pass and Love’s showers
Multnomah Falls, Mt Hood, Bend, and Haystack Rock
Crater Lake National Park
Olympic National Park
Whidbey Island and Port Townsend Ferry
Kurt Cobain’s house in Aberdeen, WA
The Last Blockbuster, Bend OR
Shakey’s Pizza, Rendon, WA
Ken’s Artisan Pizza and 50-50’s, Portland
Fast foods near Astoria, OR
Sushi Kashiba, Seattle

Yeah I saw your post, I guess I was looking for the most central location with the most to do. I'm leaning toward a VRBO near Olympic, still have some research to do.

Friend,
There are so many wonderful outdoor things to do there. Seattle is central if you want to do North Cascades, Mount Rainier, and Olympic NPs.
Or you could make Portland the center, with trips along the Columbia Gorge, Astoria and Ecola State Park, Mount Hood, Bend, and Crater Lake.
As long as you stay about 100 miles east of the Pacific, you will be central to many outdoor activities. Trying to pick one spot will be hard just like trying to decide on one Christopher Radko ornament to buy. You cannot go wrong.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Inland NW> Pacific NW
Go to Couer d'Alene and have all of the hiking and lake activities you could ever want.

Y’all gotta post some actual trails and things to see here. This board gets off on Couer d’Alene and I’ve been through there and don’t see the attraction. It’s a big lake with hills around it. It’s fine and all but not what this site makes it out to be…

Agree, CDA is very bland. The Idaho PH is pretty bland overall, actually.
But it’s probably paradise for someone visiting from the gulf coast states.

Base near Bend.
We stayed at the Sun River Resort and loved it. You're maybe 1 1/2 hours from Crater Lake. Plenty of hiking. Great selection of restaurants and craft breweries in Bend. Cool town.

I would base in Portland. Then you would have access to Bend and Crater Lake to the south and Olympic and North Cascades a similar distance to the north. The Pacific coast would be an hour west and Mt Hood/Hood River an hour east.

Could. If you stayed near Portland you'd have access to Mt. Hood. The coastal area like Cannon Beach (you could just stay there). Smaller towns like Manzanita with a pretty beach.
It'd be a drive from Portland to Bend. Maybe 2 1/2 hours. Then, if you wanted to go to Crater Lake (which I think is one of the most amazing sites you'd ever see), you'd have to add another 1 1/2 hours - 2 hours.
